I am back with more breakcore. Hkmori makes some emotional songs. Some of you may not like this one. It's a genre that doesn't resonate with some people, but I love it.

Hiromi is a bonafide pianist virtuoso. She's one of The Greats of our time, living and breathing pure music... An unbelievably cool human being!

Once again, the scope of my musical knowledge is, at times, rather limited. And just like chronologically I'm dependent on a few sources for newer music, so it is geographically as well. One of those sources is, of course, the Eurovision Song Contest. Which, despite its name, includes a handful of countries that are decidedly NOT in Europe. Such as Israel, which is, according to my 1996 Rand McNally World Atlas, a country in Asia.

equally fun, is the fact that one of the members (guitar player I think) is a professional fly fishing person. (W/O Google I maybe wrong on which member, and whether it’s regular fishing or fly fishing…)

Like you (surprise!) I do not enjoy jazz that much (some cool and modal I do like, such as early Miles). I appreciate it more than enjoy it. But that was fucking remarkable! I love how she kept returning to Pachellbel, wandering around his work but never fully leaving the path. Wonderful!

Day 12: A song from an African artist

Obo Addy was a Ghanaian drummer and dancer who was one of the first to bring the concept of "worldbeat" to Euorpe, then to the United States. He moved to Portland, and I took courses from him at Lewis and Clark. His primary instrument was the "talking drum," an hourglass-shaped drum that you hold under your arm, which allows you to change the tones for each of the two heads. A skilled user can make it sound like human speech, and Obo was brilliant. (I could usually change tone when I was supposed to, heh). He passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on though his students who still uphold the music and traditions in our city.

He and his various groups did a lot of collaboration with Western artists, but I wanted something more purely Ghanian (and I don't want to get yelled at!). This is with his band Kukrudu, It is very percussive, so it is absolutely in my wheelhouse, and fit in well in the jazz culture of the PNW.

Like you (surprise!) I do not enjoy jazz that much (some cool and modal I do like, such as early Miles). I appreciate it more than enjoy it. But that was fucking remarkable! I love how she kept returning to Pachellbel, wandering around his work but never fully leaving the path. Wonderful!

Could not have said it better!! I also love how the (though I don't know if it's her intention) metal ruler in the piano emulates the sound of a harpischord, a precursor to the piano, which would have been the instrument of choice for composers during Paschelbel's time!

The theme from a favourite movie, Nausicaä
It is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, made in the 80's. As with all Ghibli films the female lead is portrayed as strong, intelligent, and independent. Hayao Miyazaki interprets stories and puts them into film with a focus on environmentalism, compassion, and courage. If his films express romance/relationships it is always shown as two people forming a bond that strengthens each of them; there is rarely even a disney kiss. Many of his older films had a strong impact on my younger self. Including grave of the fireflies, but don't watch that one unless you want to cry for days.

One of these artists, however, often sings in Punjabi (including doing a Beatles cover in that language) and has won several awards to contributions to Asian music. So, where does the music come from, your country of birth, or your heritage, ingrained from family? Anyway... this artist was also a staple of Asian radio in the UK before they had "mainstream" success..

I came to find Japan's Unlucky Morpheus through a side project, QUADRATUM From Unlucky Morpheus, which did an album of covers aptly called Loud Playing Workshop. I am a fan of neoclassical guitar work, and they covered fantastic but little known artists like Toney McAlpine, Racer X, and Yngwie Malmsteen, as well as the better known like Van Halen, Dream Theater, and Steve Vai. I could have chosen any of those songs, but I wanted something original.

This is the live version of "Angreifer," from their second full length album, Vampir. I chose the live version as it spotlights the interplay between their lead guitarist, Jinya, and their violinist, Jill. (And I adore that she uses the mononym "Jill").

I don't know a lot of Asian music, but know Asian Dub Foundation (ADF) from seeing them on Jools Holland.
A real mixture of dub, reggae and whatever else they feel like, often played with traditional Indian instruments.
