The judgement is excessive because defamation is based in part on the net worth of the person defamed. Carroll doesn't have a net worth sufficient to justify an $83 million award.

There are lots of procedural irregularities in both this case and the rape case which are sufficient to taint the proceedings enough that an unjust verdict was the result.

Of all of the irregularities I find it most interesting that somehow people believe that someone protesting their innocence is defamatory. That is the basic flaw in the entire mess.
