A sort of philosophical question, and not one needing an answer. I noticed yet another obit style post on the forums and it made me wonder... what is the average age of writers on Literotica. I for one am in the tailend of my fifties and came to writing quite late. Is that a norm in erotica circles, or is there more of a breadth of ages? Nothing more than being inquisitive. For me, writing filled a gap which life didn't. I just wish there is an opportunity to be more open about my writing, with likeminded souls, but that is a post for a different forum. For now though I am curious to know if anyone ever looked at the age profile behind the wonderful stories published on here?

Received wisdom is that the authorship on Lit skews male more than female, and older rather than younger. But... given that it's all anonymous, and that most writers don't go near the forums, we have very little way of knowing.

We also need to remember that there are many, many writers who come to Lit for a brief period, post a small number of stories that fulfil their need to share whatever they want to share, and then they disappear into the ether. I was, for example, pointed in the direction of an excellent piece of writing more than 20 years old now, with an author who hasn't been active since about 2004. And this account will be one of many (or even most) of the accounts here. It all adds up to a heap of "who knows?"

A lot of the people with time to post on the forums appear to be retired, certainly in the Coffee Lounge. I'm in my 50s and still working, so quite envious of that (but not of the increased health problems the older generation have - I've got quite enough already.)

I started writing erotica here in my early 50s, almost 8 years ago (!). It's hard to say because so few authors actually contribute here and offer any meaningful information about themselves, but I'd guess the age skews a little older than one might expect.

I think the average age is about 75 and almost all men.
My average age is 75 and I'm all man, no doubts, no uncertainty, no qualification. OP, speaking philosophically, if I came here looking for like-minded souls, I've definitely come to the wrong place.

I’m 37, and generally get the sense I’m younger than most the regulars here. To me this place both looks and feels more tailored to the tastes of Boomers and Gen-Xers than it does to Millennials or Gen Z. The UI is clunky. The user experience is archaic. The overall aesthetic is vintage 1990s. And yet, this place is an institution, and it continues to stand the test of time - or, well, to slouch the test of time.

I was in my early twenties when I started posting here, and am now in my mid-forties, so I'll skew the numbers a little, but not by much. Fifty is fast approaching. :)

I'm seventy (sixty-one when I started here), and I feel like -- with notable exceptions -- I'm probably older than most of the AH crowd.

I think the AH crowd may be older than normal for the Lit crowd in general because forums like this are an old, old tool for social networking that doesn't interest a lot of younger authors.

I think writing is one of those hobbies that you never age out of, at least not until your eye-sight fails completely and you can't physically move your fingers any more. More curious perhaps is how erotic desire doesn't fade even as the flesh ages. In fact, there are some AH members who have reported significant sexual awakenings and shifts in their later years. As a result, there certainly are a lot of much older people here, but I think there's also quite a range including some in their 20s. Bottom line, it takes all sorts.

I'm a perky big-boobed 21-year-old woman.

Well, the bit about the boobs is true at least.
Was on a cruise last week and ran into young woman mid to late twenties nice looking but absolutely flat. I told my wife, "Damn, I got bigger boobs than her...and I don;t want 'em!" Man behind me (who I did not see at first) started laughing and said he was in the same boat. I'm 71 and bigger around the belly than my chest from drinking too much beer and not enough exercise.

Mid-forties.

I note that in the Lesbian Sex category:
there are many, many writers who come to Lit for a brief period, post a small number of stories that fulfil their need to share whatever they want to share, and then they disappear into the ether.
They - if they are who they claim they are - seem to skew young. There are a few who hang around e.g. @genzsub but they only rarely visit the AH.

Where are the kids posting their erotica?
In answer to this, they probably aren't. I doubt they read much, let alone write, sadly.

Pretty sure this place is Geriatric Park.
I’ve seen so many posts where people are confused about complete basics of how to use computers and the internet that I can only surmise the demographics here are a mixture of:
  • Zoomers who grew up with iPhones in hand and anything with a keyboard scares and confuses them
  • Boomers who grew up with rotary phones and anything electronic scares and confuses them
Based on other factors, my strong suspicion is that the second group predominates.

I'm definitely on the younger end of the spectrum. Let's just say I'm older than 20 and younger than 30. Maybe that's clear in some of my responses. Maybe it isn't. I know for a fact there are people younger than me around, and even people younger than 18. I won't say I first visited the site when I was younger than 18, because that would be against the rules (which I always follow...), but I'm very sure an underage portion of readership exists. Probably the reading population is slightly younger on average than the writing one.
