FWIW - I forgot to point out that while elections in the bigger cities tend to be partisan (Democrats vs Republicans vs whomever else) - the smaller cities and towns are non-partisan - just names on the ballot, listed in the order the names were drawn out of a hat.
I haven't really paid close attention to the details of the mayor of his family - I figured I would get caught up if AM was having to campaign for office. Whatever his reasons for being mayor in the first place - that could have a bearing on whether he wants to run or drop out. Since the job doesn't pay anything, I'm guessing he has other things to do. On the other hand, to preside over the revitalization of the city could be something he wants to do - for his ego, his legacy, etc. Or maybe he realizes he'll probably loose to AM, so he decides not to run to save himself the embarrassment.
Or maybe someone threatens to expose the Maylor's extracurricular activities - that could certainly happen despite all I said before, it's not like everyone is pure. It could be someone who wants to see AM in office, or just someone who wants him out, but it won't be with AM's knowledge and consent.
At any rate, the Winter Festival could traditionally be the event that also "kicks off" the campaign for city government offices - everybody running for office gives a five minute speech or whatever .. not long enough to interfere with the fun. If someone decides to run, they can always drop out later. This way, AM doesn't have a long time to decide - that's the deadline to file, after that it's too late.
So it's fine with me if AM is unopposed. It's fine with me if she has opposition either from the current mayor or anyone else.
And here's another thing I'm thinking - for way down the line - Anne Marie as Mayor and "Marti" Griggs the lesbian Chief Executive for the city will have to develop a close working relationship ...
