Covid-19 Stories.

Oh just go ahead and get it and get it over with and open up the economy, the Trumpettes say. It's just like the flu.

Just opening the economy and going back to "normal" guarantees more disasters in the megacities and suburbs. This is the beginning of a change: moving back to small towns and reviving the Main Street economy with local crafts to replace imported mass production. Politically, that is the mixing of deep blue and deep red to make purple everywhere.

It has been pointed out that almost as many Americans have died from Covid-19 (56,259) than died in the Viet Nam War (58,220). Of course the COVID-19 figure will eventually be much larger.

SoCal blasted for lockdown protest: ‘Huntington Beach has become the Florida of California’

Orange County, of course!

Southern California was the scene of a large, anti-lockdown protest on Friday.

“Large crowds opposing the state’s coronavirus stay-at-home mandate took to the streets of downtown Huntington Beach Friday, a day after the governor closed Orange County beaches and drew frustration and criticism from some residents and city leaders,” The Orange County Register reported Friday.

Alarming study indicates coronavirus has mutated into an even more more contagious version

A new study from scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory says that the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has mutated into another strain that is more contagious than the original, reported the Los Angeles Times.

“The new strain appeared in February in Europe, migrated quickly to the East Coast of the United States and has been the dominant strain across the world since mid-March, the scientists wrote,” the Times said.

Maybe we should call this one Covid-45?:)

Three family members charged in shooting death of security guard who told a customer to put on a face mask

(CNN)Three family members have been charged in the killing of a security guard who told a customer at a Michigan Family Dollar store to wear a state-mandated face mask, officials said on Monday.
Calvin Munerlyn, 43, died at a Flint hospital after he was shot in the head Friday, said Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser.
Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Sharmel Lashe Teague, 45, have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder, along with other charges, the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on Monday.

Sharmel and Larry Teague are married, and Bishop is Sharmel's son, according to the prosecutor's office.
"From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the Governor's Executive Order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers," Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in the statement.

It is unclear if they are Republicunts.

Remdesivir explained – what makes this drug work against viruses?

With the FDA approving Gilead’s Remdesivir as an emergency use treatment for the most acute cases of COVID-19, many people are wondering what type of a drug it is.

Remdesivir is a member of one of the oldest and most important classes of drugs – known as nucleoside analogue. Currently there are more than 30 of these types of drugs that have been approved for use in treating viruses, cancers, parasites, as well as bacterial and fungal infections, with many more currently in clinical and preclinical trials.

Supreme Court declines to lift Pennsylvania COVID-19 health order

The Supreme Court on Wednesday denied a request to halt an order Pennsylvania's governor entered in March to close businesses in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The petitioners, a conservative political action committee and several businesses, told the justices that Gov. Tom Wolf's (D) executive order "has and is continuing to cause irreparable harm."

The court’s denial of the request, issued without comment, means fewer than five of the nine justices supported the petition.

The outcome was unsurprising given the Supreme Court’s long recognition of broad government authority amid public health crises. Previously, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania also denied the petitioners' request.

Gun-waving SUV driver crashes parade celebrating nurses

People across the county are celebrating and supporting healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

But a ceremony and parade being held in Delaware County, Pa., was marred when a gun-waving SUV driver crashed a parade of first responders who were paying tribute to the staff at Mercy Fitzgerald Medical Center Tuesday night, according to 6ABC in Philadelphia.

Police in Darby, Pa., said the male suspect threatened to hurt people while waving the gun.

The resulting police chase of the suspect in the SUV came crashing to an end when the male driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled it over at Main Street and MacDade Boulevard in Darby.

Coronavirus found in semen of COVID-19 survivors; sexual transmission unclear, study says

Coronavirus found in semen of COVID-19 survivors; sexual transmission unclear, study says.

Traces of the COVID-19 coronavirus have been found in the semen of some severely infected men, raising the possibility that the virus might be sexually transmitted, a new study from China claims.

Researchers found evidence of the virus in six men out of a group of 38 COVID-19 patients at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital in China who provided samples.

The six men included four who were still infected and two who were recovering, the researchers said.

Hoping Llamas Will Become Coronavirus Heroes

Antibodies from Winter, a 4-year-old llama with great eyelashes, have neutralized coronavirus and other infections in lab experiments.

Winter is a 4-year-old chocolate-colored llama with spindly legs, ever-so-slightly askew ears and envy-inducing eyelashes. Some scientists hope she might be an important figure in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

She is not a superpowered camelid. Winter was simply the lucky llama chosen by researchers in Belgium, where she lives, to participate in a series of virus studies involving both SARS and MERS. Finding that her antibodies staved off those infections, the scientists posited that those same antibodies could also neutralize the new virus that causes Covid-19. They were right, and published their results Tuesday in the journal Cell.

Scientists have long turned to llamas for antibody research. In the last decade, for example, scientists have used llamas’ antibodies in H.I.V. and influenza research, finding promising therapies for both viruses.

Dr. Brix: ‘There is nothing from the CDC that I can trust’

“During a task force meeting Wednesday, a heated discussion broke out between Deborah Birx, the physician who oversees the administration’s coronavirus response, and Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Birx and others were frustrated with the CDC’s antiquated system for tracking virus data, which they worried was inflating some statistics — such as mortality rate and case count — by as much as 25 percent, according to four people present for the discussion or later briefed on it. Two senior administration officials said the discussion was not heated,” the newspaper reported.

“There is nothing from the CDC that I can trust,” Birx reportedly said, according to two of the people.

“The flare-up came two days after it was reported that an internal government model, based on data from the CDC and other agencies, projected the daily death count would rise to 3,000 by June 1,” the newspaper noted.

Some of Trump’s advisers described the president as glum and shell-shocked by his declining popularity. In private conversations, he has struggled to process how he went from thinking he was on a glide path to reelection to now losing to Joe Biden.

Ignorance and stupidity have consequences, Donald!:)

Dr. Brix has lost her credibility as well--that was finished on the day she sat there while Trump advised disinfecting your insides and didn't immediately point out that that would kill you. Her ambition outstrips her integrity.

Sioux tribes refuse to take down coronavirus checkpoints after GOP governor threatens legal action

In South Dakota, Sioux tribes have set up highway checkpoints in the hope of preventing the spread of coronavirus on their reservations — and Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, has demanded that the checkpoints be removed. But Sioux leaders are fighting back.

In a letter on Sunday, May 10, Maggie Seidel (Noem’s policy director), told members of the Oglala Sioux and the Cheyenne River Sioux tribes, “The checkpoints on state and US highways are not legal, and if they don’t come down, the state will take the matter to federal court.” But Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Chairman Harold Frazier is not backing down.

Frazier told CNN, “We want to ensure that people coming from ‘hot spots’ or highly infected areas, we ask them to go around our land…. With the lack of resources we have medically, this is our best tool we have right now to try to prevent (the spread of COVID-19).”

If you look at the numbers

The USA is doing very much worse than the WORLD! Probably because we have a Orangrangatange for a leader.

Leaked White House data shows infections spiking more than 1,000% in rural areas that backed Trump

A leaked unreleased White House coronavirus task force report showing cases spiking in areas across the country has undercut President Donald Trump’s claim that cases are declining across the nation.

“You know, the numbers are coming down very rapidly all throughout the country, by the way,” Trump declared at a Monday news conference. “There may be one exception, but all throughout the country, the numbers are coming down rapidly.”

But a leaked coronavirus task force report obtained by NBC News shows that some parts of the country — rural counties in Tennessee and Kansas — have seen cases balloon by more than 1,000% in a matter of one week. Other counties in Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin saw increases of more than 400%.

Despite the alarming increases, Trump has continued to publicly and falsely claim that cases are falling nearly everywhere.

“Coronavirus numbers are looking MUCH better, going down almost everywhere,” he tweeted Tuesday.

Fauci also pushed back on Trump’s optimism and pressure on states to reopen businesses during the hearing.

“If some areas, cities, states or what-have-you jump over those various checkpoints and prematurely open up without having the capability of being able to respond effectively and efficiently, my concern is that we will start to see little spikes that might turn into outbreaks,” Fauci said. “I have been very clear in my message — to try to the best extent possible to go by the guidelines, which have been very well thought out and very well delineated.”

Of course this guidance that the CDC produced is not to be released b/c Trumpski want to hide the fact that he is a Losing Loser who is going to lose the PeeResidency in November.:D

Republicans are in a battle with each other because federal dollars are being sent to COVID-19 hotspots

Republican elected officials are fighting with each other because some red states are being forced to spend money on other states that are suffering from the coronavirus.

While Americans might believe they live in a united group of states, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) took to the Senate floor Wednesday to rant that he doesn’t want to give any of Florida’s money to New York. It’s unclear where the senator believes money comes from when Florida is hit by hurricanes.

Fellow conservative Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) is similarly fighting for funding as his state is overtaken with COVID-19 cases.

“Maybe Rick knows something I don’t know but I don’t think so,” said Kennedy. “I don’t know what the president’s going to do. We had a very positive meeting yesterday.”

You can bet that PeeResident Trumpski was blowing smoke if he said he was doing anything.:)

Why would the red states need Covid money at all? It's just a DNC hoax, isn't it?

Even If We Come Up With A Vaccine, There May Not Be Enough Vials To Put It In

What we’re learning from the Trump team’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is that disaster preparation measures are very complicated and involve lots of moving parts. We’re learning that a nation's ability to respond to a crisis depends very much on having government infrastructure devoted to predicting where those crises may hit and what small, seemingly innocuous bits are likely to wreck our ability to respond to the whole thing if we don't get them right.

This is why you might, say, create a national security team devoted exclusively to preparing responses to newly emerging pandemics as opposed to having the president's daughter's real estate investor husband attempt to work it out on the fly. A national security team devoted exclusively to preparing for pandemics might be able to tell you that even if we were to come up with a vaccine immediately for the current threat, we could not distribute it because there is a shortage of the sand used to make the glass used to make the little vials that the vaccine would be put into. It turns out you can't just pour the stuff into Mason jars.

Are there enough Trump Vodka bottles left over to re-purpose?:)

'Reopen My State' Protests 'Fizzle' Without Koch Money

Womp Womp! Koch money isn't funding the LIBERTY! astroturf, so...surprise! The "where's my haircut" people are going back inside

And their "Reopen" rallies were BS astroturf. Kathleen Parker in The Washington Post:

Recent attempts to reenact the erstwhile tea party protests in a movement to oppose coronavirus-related shutdowns have shown signs of fizzling despite President Trump’s weird cheerleading. They are, after all, shouting down Trump’s own guidelines for trying to contain the new coronavirus, which has afflicted more than 1.4 million Americans and led to more than 81,000 deaths in the United States...

The protesters began losing steam when the Koch network, underwriters of the tea party movement from a decade ago, decided to run with scientists instead of the gun-toting provocateurs trampling the spring-green grass around state capitols. The chief executive of Americans for Prosperity, the main political arm of the network, said the group prefers working with doctors, data crunchers and public policy leaders to create guidelines for a safe and staggered reopening of American businesses.
