Did literotica decrease the maximum number of characters for titles? I can't continue with my next chapter due to title character limit

Hello! I'm wondering if the website decreased the maximum amount of characters allowed in the title of a story.

I have this series entitled:
Hot College Stud's Dark Secret Ch. 01
Hot College Stud's Dark Secret Ch. 02
Hot College Stud's Dark Secret Ch. 03

The last chapter I posted was back in Sept 2024. I'm only adding a new chapter now, but when I try to input the title, which is "Hot College Stud's Dark Secret Ch. 04" I am going over the character limit. I don't know how to proceed with my series because of this

Can anyone help?

The maximum is 35 characters; this is what the tooltip says when you submit a story.

I don't think the limit changed recently. I have an essay posted in July 2024 whose title went slightly over the limit ("WIWAW: With a Little Help From Her Son", 38 characters) and I had to add a note to admin in order to get it through.

I'm not aware of a change either. Check to make sure you haven't embedded an extra space in your text line, but if it doesn't work out, TheLobster's comment about including the note to Laurel is the way to go. She has the option to stretch by a limited number of additional characters on a case-by-case basis.

I just checked and my previous chapters have 37 characters in the title, and so does my new chapter. But this time it won't let me go over :(

Okay, I will try to add a note regarding this. Thank you!

DM Laurel and ask for en exception since the previous three chapters were approved. Is there a chance that you submitted them with a slightly different name?
These are all 37 characters, so it could be you submitted them as Ch1. Sometimes Laurel will do us favors and modify the name to include the Ch. 01, or something like that to make it consistent with the auto grouping of series.

Edit: I aksed for one of my 750 word stories and got "Juliana Jones and the Temple of Well, Fuck Me" approved, so...

What I suspect might have happened is that "series tags" that Lit recognizes (Ch. #, Pt. #) weren't previously included in the limit but now are. Maybe they treated it as a bug fix and didn't announce it as a policy change.

I asked for help regarding this in the "Note to Admin" as per TheLobster's suggestion.

The title for this new chapter is formatted the exact same way as the previous ones (tried typing it from scratch and copy pasting the old titles, none of them fit), which were all 37 characters. For some reason, I did not encounter any problems when I made my previous chapters, but now I am. Hopefully they can help me with this

Use the envelope in the upper right corner and DM Laurel directly. Include all three existing names and briefly explain what is happening with the fourth. Above all, ask politely, and don't expect a direct response. She may or may not. With my request, it just went through.

EDIT: Or you could change Ch. 04 to Ch4 and see if she doesn't fix it to match the others on her own.

I already included it in the note to admin though. Would it be like I'm pestering her if I also send her a DM or is it okay

She'll see it in the admin note. I had a title that was 3 characters longer than the limit and asked her to make an exception and she did no problem.

Yes. The Note to the Editor is to the same person. She'll get to it, just be patient. Next story, choose a shorter title ;).

It definitely got shortened within the last 4 years. I bumped into it and had to change the title. I can't remember the details. I must have re-submitted something.

It's been 35 characters as the default ever since I've been here. The site lengthens it as needed. It'll be a legacy of the original database set up in the late nineties, when field lengths were often set with quite short limits. The technical elements have changed over time, which allows the site flexibility. Generally speaking, if you look at the lists, the site prefers titles that fit on one line.

Dug up a post of mine ( as Dark ) from 2010, and it was tested at 35 characters then, with 60 for the description line. That's just the earliest I could find with a quick search. I'm reasonably certain it's been the same since I started in the early '00s.

Really should have searched for WeirdHarold posts. He was the font of knowledge back then. He probably posted the length limits umpteen times before I even hit the scene.

I do recall the limit being 35 characters as well, but for some reason it allowed me to type out my previous chapter names that were 37 characters, so I didn't even know I was over the limit. I wish it had blocked me from doing it in the 1st place so I wouldn't encounter this problem months later haha

I'd just remove the full stop after Ch, because that will get you in under the limit, and Laurel will automatically add that back in, because that's standard practice.

Unless you specifically request it, she changes any version of chapter to Ch. and part to Pt. If you just put a number, she automatically changes it to Ch. It will be painfully obvious what you mean, it will fit within the title section of the form, and should almost certainly come out the other side the same as all the previous chapters.

Instead of "ch. 04," just submit it as "4." She will most likely change it to match the others. I've used all kinds of numbering schemes for my multiparters and this is what invariably happens.

Thank you for the suggestions! I already submitted the story yesterday though with the Note to Admin explaining it. Would it be better to just leave that be and just follow your suggestion for succeeding chapters? Or do you think it would be faster if I removed my submission, edit the title, and resubmit?

If you remove your submission and resubmit, it will go to the back of the queue. I'd let it ride...

Yeah, just let this one ride. It will make things easier on future chapters, but this one should be fine as submitted to achieve the same result.
