The earnings call last week underscored the severity of Disney’s death spiral. The layoffs and draconian cost cutting have not righted the ship, ESPN is an albatross, streaming revenue is sinking so they think raising prices is the answer, and attendance is down at their US theme parks.
CEO Bob Iger attributes that decline to fading post-Covid pent-up demand for travel to Florida, which DeSantis fully reopened from pandemic lockdowns earlier than other US states. ”If you look at the numbers in Florida in 2023 … versus 2022, where not as much was open and Florida was the only game in town, there is a lot more competition today,” Iger noted on the call.
