Here are some suggested etiquette guidelines for our role-playing:

1. Respect character autonomy. It is a basic courtesy in interactive role-play writing that you do not put significant words, if any, in another writer's character's mouth, and you do not assume another writer's character makes decisions or takes significant action without that other writer's permission.

2. Be consistent. Make sure you know what is going on in the other writers' posts well enough that you do not post some action or event that contradicts what another writer has already established happened.

3. Note the locale. I have supplied a set of photos and floor-plans for the manor house. As you move through it, make sure your movements and descriptions follow the information provided by those resources.

4. Be literate. It makes it easier and more enjoyable for everyone if writers follow the conventions of English spelling and grammar (the one exception being in dialogue if your character does not speak the Queen's English).

5. Proofread! See 4, above.


I think these five make a good start. If anyone wants to propose any further etiquette guidelines for our role-play, please do so below.

I took advantage of the floor plans in my posts today. Not only did it help me understand to where and how everyone had moved, it inspired the idea that when sometimes spending summers and holidays at Dominion Manor while growing up, Karen would hide on the mezzanine to eavesdrop on the adults downstairs.

The "Setting" post for Dominion includes this: "A brick and steel fence surrounds the whole property. From its secure gate...."

Yet we see everyone just driving up to the front of the house. Do Josephine's regular guests have a key or code that lets them in without needing to call the house?

Conversely, a newly introduced character should play needing to be "buzzed" in.

Yes I also found this puzzling about the report about an explosion from 'Neighbors' to the police.

No one would have been close enough to have heard that explosion let alone pin point it came from Josephine's Mansion. I hope my post may have cleared up some of the confusion about this.

I see I've been remiss. Much like my character...

What I sent to Empress Josephine was the following character.

Ian August 'Gus' Stewart. Mad engineer and general handyman to his patron Josephine Czartoryski.

Neither tall nor short. In the morning, after his shower he stands 5'10, and weighs out at 180 pounds. He's got a heavy build which helps lugging all the stuff around he has to. Close cropped hair which started brown and is now salt and pepper. When he has a beard, which is often, it's kept short military length. His mustache is pure WWII RAF.

It would look corny except for all the strange scars on his body. Which he does not talk about. Even to his patron.

Gus worked his way through school. Construction and a few other odd jobs. His bachelors degree is in electrical engineering and after a few years picked up a masters in computer science. Gus's resume is thin. He just smiles when asked why. It's not a nice smile. People stop asking. But the results speak for themselves. You want it? You have the budget for it? Next week sometime...

Gus hangs out in the carriage house behind the main building (I checked the spec's on the mansion. There is a shot of a building behind the mansion - you didn't describe it - it's not the pool house - so it's the carriage house above another garage) and in the HVAC and elevator spaces on the roof.

Gus habitually wears either a brown duck or leather Utilikilt. Patron Josephine is at times amused or exasperated - or both. When Gus is on his best behavior there may be a nice business shirt on his upper torso. When he's really dressed up he has some kind of old leather jacket. Don't ask.

When he's working it'll be a denim workshirt that has seen better years. When he's really working it may be a tank top - or... Gus believes in his comfort.

The outfit is finished with expensive leather work boots and white socks. Always.

As to what lies under the Utilikilt. One word. Freedom!!

Gus has always a somewhat formal - for Gus - relationship with his patron (not boss. I wanted to imply a good old early Imperial Roman sense of loyalty here). "He bothering you?" would be a line not unexpected from Gus. You would hesitate when answering. You know the guest would be escorted out... well. Still breathing? You have doubts. And damn the man. He'd sleep the sleep of the innocent.

What. DO. You mean it won't start...

I should add Gus enjoys cigars. And bourbon. And strong coffee.

And of course Gus has a past. A great device for a hack writer, highly commended.

I'd like Gus. But I think he's an acquired taste.

For those of you who wonder how to write in a role-play where you have to rely on others to post, check out this excellent example:

We just did a scene where I give KaseE's character, Karen, a present. At the time Karen opens it, neither KaseE nor Aussie_Wolf knew what was in the box, yet both were able to post their characters' reactions to it (KaseE's post; Aussie_Wolf's post).

Bravo to them both for their creativity and good writing!
