On mortality

We all die Luci...I just dont by into worrying about it. I think most negative thought generates itself again and causes stress and stress can do horrible things to the body. Negative thought patterns tend to make you more reactive. When I get stressed out...I try and step back from a situation. I deal with people generally when they are in trouble and they look to you for help...be it a medication to kill the pain, an explanation to what is happening, or an avenue they should pursue....in essence yes you do disconnect and perhaps that is why you connected people are getting so angry.

Now onward to laughter...my personal defense mechanism is laughter...When I see a bad situation I usually try and find the positive in a situation. If you don't you go off your rocker eventually. Crying gets you know where and makes you feel worse, where as laughter gives you endorphins and helps you get through anything. Laughter is a gift from God. The patients I have that maintain their sense of humor have better outcomes.

Now as far as picking the right thing to say at the right time....okay I dont always...but I dont think too many people do.

That silly teenage girl that took a bottle of antibiotics was worried. She had done it for attention and because she felt no one understood her. When I got there she was wild eyed crying and afraid she was going to die. I looked her in the eyes and said It's going to be okay, but you will probably have one hell of a yeast infection and a stomach ache. "She laughed and felt better." and that is why I laughed too because I remember the moment.

Kerry is not a practicing Catholic to begin with and his wife I believe is from an Orthodox Chirstian. To try and equate him to Kennedy is observe. The pope and the church didnt give him credit because his life is contrary to most of their teachings.

Kennedy gave great speeches, then ran around on his wife with every fluzy that was around. Kennedy was good at coming up Peace corps but a poor tactition...the Bay of Pigs warranted a full scale invasion...not just support of an oppositions. He did get the nuke construction halted which was the end goal I suppose. He and Cruzchev nearly went to nuclear war and back. There is a lot of speculation as to who really killed him. It would be interesting to know who really did?

Okay pops now to your inability to hear the truth. I can take you to the boys grave in Coal Island. It wasnt the British rifle that did him in....you will remember that tanks are more heavily armed. The soldier did him in after he was wounded. If you really travel Ireland and not just the ports you would understand that there are regions still in conflict. In the past few years a lot of the British troop strength and listening posts have been taken down. That has helped tremendously and life is slowly turning around. Belfast has a face lift and Dublin's computer industry and loans from the EU to builld new trains and the like have infused the Irish economy. Right now they have the youngest working population is western Europe. Still most of the progression is in the Republic and the north is still trapped in a bipolar state. The IRA gunmen are now on social welfare and are basically drinking their paychecks waiting for the old ways to return or someone to offer them a job. Okay who wants to higher an alcoholic hitman? Not a whole lot of people. But the bright spot is that the old guard is in control and the young ones respect them. The Blanket men of the sixties are guiding the north into self rule with the help of Blair. Cooperation with the orangemen is still at an impasse though...they stand to lose power gained through centuries of repression. I think most of the norths problems are from a lack of jobs and therefore a lack of hope. Things escalated around the turn of the century because Belfasts textile mills and shipping industry was slowing down. The Catholics lost what few jobs there were...then steps in the IRA. With the prospects of jobs there may yet be hope for Ireland, yet if the industry pulls out and goes for cheaper labor forces in India then they are doomed to repeat their cycle.

Peat is used still on the West coast..but not as a primary heat source....the old farmer who doesnt have too much may resort to finding peat to heat his home...but most people are leaving the west coast and running for Dublin jobs. Dublin has gone from a town of 3000 to a town of 200 000 in a decade. Most of the peat is see is made into trinkets for the tourists....harps, crosses, busts of saints

I wasn't going to get on this trail again... but you really are still full of shit mate and things need to be corrected here for the sake of clarity that is.

While I don't dispute that there have been years of strife and even injustice in Ireland, I must still take you to task over this bullshit about the soldier... what was it you said in your mock John Wayne voice... drilling the kid in the head to finish him off after 'according to your first post on the matter', shooting him 80 times... fuck me some tough cookie if he was still alive after taking 80 rounds of 7.62mm... I think your drunken terrorist mate might have been feeding you shit pal... (Oh yes my reference to 'Freedom fighters' was a piss take... the IRA are no better than the Muslim terrorists of Osama's bunch... even lower down the scale actually... at least the islamic lads have the guts to face their enemy and die for their cause in suicide... The IRA lot just left bombs in litter bins to blow up civilian shoppers and made sure they were well out of range when the thing blew up... Yellow bellied fuck-wits).

But now we realise the tank shot the lad 80 times... some range on the tank machine gun... the nearest a tank came to Ireland was Wiltshire England... they never deployed main battle tanks in Ireland mate... never not never did they... only armoured personal carriers, most of those old fashioned one's and un-armed as a vehicle... no mate you've been conned by the pissed up Paddy... I tell you what, show us the news reports of the day on this incident and maybe I'll accept it... and don't come out with crap about censorship... the Nationalist press and foreign press could never have kept quiet about this one, no way could they.

I've been to all parts of Ireland mate, not just the ports, nothing to do in the ports... mainly Donegal in the Republic I must admit, but other places too on my travels, including, Omah, and Derry.

Anyway last word on the subject from me... put up with your evidence, or shut up.

pops.

Clarity sake

Omah has had it's problems too. Next time your up that way stop by Dungannon and take a taxi to Coal Island....McGirrs Pub is the only place to stay and the Murphy twins man the bar. They aren't a trusting lot, but if you buy a few rounds, they may talk to you. And yes it is an IRA town, but no they arent bad people. Most of their fight was over when Bobby Sands died or do you remember him. Judging with todays eyes is a misrepresentaion and a diservice to history. They have put their arms down in hopes of peace. Tank or light armoured vehicle seems the same to a boy with a rock. Thankfully they have stopped driving them around and have pulled most troops back home to England.

At any rate if you wander up the hill by the old church there is a graveyard. Coal Isand is small enough and there are only two churches. Here are the graves. Do not dishonor the dead, in that town they have meaning to you they will not. As much as I love that town it has its share of trouble, I prefer Gallway and the Aran Islands because they are free there.

Jayzussfuck, you really are a load of blarney. I just noted a book that lays out very clearly why Byron would be diagnosed bi-polar. I suggest you take a look at the thread on depression. It is not something to "embrace" the way you so naively put it. It is also not something to "move on" from, but to learn to live with, even to keep from killing one. Depression can cripple and kill, it does not help one survive.

Your comments are exactly what is wrong with the way society views mental illness, plus your romanticized and ignorant views on genius. Given your record for discussion on this board I will not reply more, but I had to "speak up for bastards".

Holychurchoflatterdaysaints, Perdita. Is BS an expert on depression now? He may be one of its chief causes.

They strike without warning using stealth, torture, lies, and deception to rain down violence without regard to innocent lives lost.

They cynically exploit the World's media. They constantly invoke the name of their God, to justify every cruel act for their holy cause. They'll use and sacrifice innocent believing kids as warriors. Most of the world already hates and fears them, and no country on Earth is safe from their rage or terror. They are the new evil in the World. So much for the Bush folks. Depression

It is one of the most undiagnosed disorders actually. I am sorry for Perdita's disease. The things I remember that help are UV light and vitamin D supplements. There are med categories namely tricyclics, serotonin uptake inhibitors...but the tricyclics in particular have rough side effects.

The new lot of drug includes Wellbutrin, Prozac, Effexor...etc

The are relatively new and she should talk with her doctor before taking.

Homeopathically St. Johns Wort has positive effects but being a natural plant its dosage is difficult to manage.

Im off to work soon. I wish you all a safe and happy week. We have had some great arguements and discussions. I wish you all a restful night and easy week.

Farewell,

Yeah, I know. I picked Ritalin because it seemed to me the most worthless drug which has been given the most incorrectly. Too many normal kids have been given the drug over those who genuinely need it in order to focus.

And to Perdita, you are right. My best friend was a sufferer of manic depression until his untimely end. And many of my friends in high school and college had one type or another of near suicide attempt. Depression does kill.

Also to Blarney, I'm assuming that when you say "moving past weakness" you are really saying learning how to cope with being much more twisted and different than everyone else and trying desperately to get some good out of it through some sort of pursuit. If that's what you meant, then you do make a good point and your wording is just off. If not, well then you're probably too disgustingly normal to understand.

It will be a long time before we know what the long-term effects of early ritalin use really are. I know it's necessary to make children fit in with their peers in a classroom environment. Unforuntely, not everyone can afford the individual attention that might benefit a child who loves history but hates math, or who becomes easily bored and wants to skip from topic to topic...My nephew has been taking ritalin since second grade, and the saddest part of it is, he's heard enough discussions about its use that he believes himself to be defective. If he's losing at a game he says, "I have a learning disability," and "I can't pay attention to things."

Just a note to the stone. When Pops talks about something other than wanking or flirting with us femme types, that's *it*. No one's going to listen to your responses to him now unless there is an apology involved.

b.s., you barged in here with your rusty guns and spittle as if we AH vets would mistake you for a thoughtful intelligent person. I strongly recommend you lurk a bit longer and get to kinow who we are.

Finally, go reread your posts and see if it's not the least bit embarrassing how often you've told us about the life-saving and healing you've done. Note: none of these serious topics have been 'about you'. Hint: for all their passion and intensity, when people like Sher and Colly discuss politics one never gets the slightest impression it's about 'them'.

Im not a fan of Ritalin either

I think ADD has been misrepresented and often misdiagnosed...I deal with lead kids from time to time and several of them were misdiagnosed until they rean a serum lead. Schools have difficulty with hyperactive children and I think perpetuate the diagnosis. My nephew is "ADD" too and getting him involved in soccer teams and things to exercise him have worked much better than Ritalin...now all he does is sit around and play computer games.

As SSSarahh mentioned above, kids with ADD, and some adults with it even, have trouble with team activities. We get distracted too easily.

Exercise is good - but not so good when someone in a team setting is counting on you.

I had some great discussions...and yes I did run in with guns blazing...I just dont understand why everyone is so anti conservative and all I hear on the radios, newspapers are all bad press. I am hopeful towards the future. I think everything is gonna be okay, I really do. This too shall pass.

It's a setting in one of Shakespeare's comedies. I'll let you do the research. (It was also his mother's maiden name.) P.

ADD people and kids are fun though

Some of my funnest patients are the ADD kids....mile a minute and laughing all the way...it is just school they have trouble with..they normally meet life head on.

I've been told that about myself....And was elected "class clown" in high school.

The sad thing about that, though, is most of the time it's a coping mechanism.

amen to that. If you're funny and witty or sarcastic people never bother to look any deeper. sometimes I laugh to hold back tears

Coping mechanisms

Laughter is the best one though. I use it often. In fact I have been told I have two emotions...90% Happy and 10% pissed off...haha..now I know you wont have trouble believing that one.

I began laughing during my cancer treatments and never stopped. But cancer did give me the ability to disattach from pain and for that I am grateful. It works wonders in medicine.

Okay, everybody's been quoting you in their posts and I was having to read you anyway, so I thought I might as well get it straight from the horse's....mouth.

You may had some great discussions but you were alone in that. That anyone could work in the medical field and claim to have compassion for the people he treats - and then make a joke when presented with the fact that 60,000 Iraqis have died at our hands including 30,000 civilians - demonstrates something sick in your character. Either that, or you just thought it would be amusing to pretend to be a bigot as well as a mysogenist. It isn't, and you are, and you're proud of it, and you've made the Ignore button my new favorite convenience feature.

Blarney -

Once again it is fairly obvious you don't have a fucking clue about what you are blathering.

Don't over-generalize people and diagnoses. It is extremely unprofessional (aren't you supposed to be a med-tech?) and very unreliable.

It doesn't matter what topic is discussed on the AH, you manage to jump seamlessly and cluelessly from one to another. (Most of us have several areas of expertise as well as solid overall knowledge. No one here claims to know everything about everything - well, except you, of course.)

ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - these would possibly be the "silly" ones.

ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder - there is no hyperactive behavior involved.

And when children are truly and severely affected by either of these, they are miserable, not happy. They feel pulled in 100 directions at the same time and yet are often unable to finish a single task.

Exercise doesn't help, neither does diet. (Oh, I know this crops up from time to time, but the latest research indicates no direct link. Again.)

In fact, when a normal kid needs to run off some steam, you send them outside to romp for awhile. But when you send an ADHD kid outside, they tend to work up more energy. That's how their brain works.

At any rate, it is amazing how you feel you are qualified to discuss any topic in the AH. You aren't. I think you'd probably be more comfortable in the General Board. (At least until you submit a story? The AH does refer to Author's Hangout.)

I think you misinterpreted that

It was you and Dr M that inferred that. I have great respect for the military. My whole family is military or medicine. Those who are not military fans may not realize where we have come. From 400 000 dead in WWII to 800 dead in Iraq and things are beginning to take shape there. That to me is impressive. Those boys pulled it off with less than 1/2 percent casualty. Our technology is devastating agreed and it is no doubt that they hate us for their civilian casualties...but compared to Nam and WWII a lot of lives were saved. If we can train enough Iraqi security forces to take over, then things will start to turn around there.

I wont go into to it anymore but if you examine military history perhaps you will realize how effective our military really is.

Shereads have a nice night. You shouldnt jump to conclusions from posts.
