I was Prof in the Math-Science Dept for 20+ years at a tiny college. My position was eliminated due to low enrollment and now I work in industry. I have strong opinions about my experience in academia and would share what I know about both academia and industry.

About me: science geek, wood butcher, bread maker, tree climber, bike rider, home owner, do-it-yourselfer, dog walker, introvert. I love old technology (tools, toys, slide rules) and science stuff (microscopes, beakers and test tubes, dessicators, mortar & pestle), rocks and minerals. I speak one language, but not very well.

You...want to be my friend, eh? Now, to be precise, I no longer am faculty I actually get to teach now! But I did teach undergrad and graduate levels....psychology and stats. And if you want ANY and all advise on your dissertation? I can give you that. It's literally my company I am the founder, CEO...and janitor...and security....admin...but not H.R. because they suck! Useless. Yes, the "company" is me. And my VP Buddy...Buddy is technically a cat. But in all seriousness, I work with PhD candidates, faculty researchers and other professionals doing research on methodology and the analytics. I am really, really good at analytics and writing (APA7 if you have formatting questions). Now, admittedly what I do for people can breach the sanctimonious "academic integrity" but...what academic integrity? When you have PhD's coming out of a research program who look quizzical when I mention "level of measurement"? When I have to correct the instructor on how to statistically analyze on a homework problem where the question involves whether male or female teachers answered higher on a ordinal attitudinal item? And the method of analysis the instructor advised was chi squared? So now you just took ordinal data and demoted it to nominal? Good one, prof! So amongst the things I do for the dissertation client is 100% of the data cleaning and analysis and I used to do a "write-up" of Chapter 4 and that got so involved I just...write Chapter 4 and sometimes 5. And heavy assistance on 3. But in all fairness, the student has to defend and I stress that and I teach... and I've done this now about 11 years and never lost a patient. I do quant and qualitative methodology...quant I use whatever software I need, I own SPSS, R (ooh big spender!), AMOS, JASP (again open source like R), but one can even model in Excel. And I have considerable experience with SAS and lots of the industry software...Tableau (own that)...even Sawtooth not that I've ever done a conjoint for a dissertation. CADQAS I use MAXQDA, Atlas.ti and this new open source one I'm just cutting my teeth on Delve. But I cut zero corners...if I'm doing the stats we're talking full assumption testing...everything.

And I do a lot with faculty...a recent project I worked with, primarily, two dental profs/researchers one is the Dean of the School of Dentistry at the Univ of Mississippi. If you are in the areas of social sciences, medicine, education, business or any area where I can make any sense of the data, I can help you. And statistics is a HUGE area so I'll never use the term "expert" on myself but I have tremendous expertise in classical (parametric and non-parametric) and Bayesian stats. And I am really good partly because after my PhD a century ago (well...1998) I went into the private sector which if you do analytics is THE way to go. Bigger data, dirtier data, huge variety of questions therefore huge variety of statistical techniques to bear and...fast. Building a SEM in a week or less versus months. It's different research. And private sector is much more careful then academia. And sad to say, the online learning model has been way over-leveraged, the qualifications of faculty with respect to quantitative analysis is lacking severely, so...I'm very busy! And unlike faculty who by definition always work at 1 school? My clients come from around the world. Literally. So I get a non-random sampling yes, but...I know the state of things from my I guess purposive sample of universities I deal with. Some are very stringent some...wow. But almost to a university? PhD students committees are...bad. Not helpful and sometimes counter-productive. And fyi, some universities totally welcome people like me, but others I have to be in the shadows. Which again...ok, faculty..DO YOUR JOB...and I wouldn't have to work so hard. But my self-assessment? Don't take my word. I have prospective clients talk to my current and prior clients without me present. Organic conversation. They can talk about anything, I don't care. I welcome it! I'm very good! Oh the other reason? I LOVE ANALYTICS. I do it for fun as well. I literally do it for free. Cuz I love it. And that all sounds very boring, sure, but...as you can see, I'm a freak! In the most complimentary of usages of that term.

And I know this sounded like a big advertisement. Not my point. I'm more than happy to dispense my thoughts, help...in my capacity as a human. I don't need the work. I have plenty of work. BUT...if you DO need someone like me...then maybe...well...there's a lot of garbage out there. Sadly. I want people using me simply because...I won't steer them wrong! I would hate to be responsible for...TORPEDO...ING...someone's biggest project in their life. (See you really should have said "torpedo or any form of the word as it fits in the sentence" just kidding). I think yeah, a client choosing me is investing non-trivial monetary sums but...the TRUE investment and my responsibility? Is the trust they show me by handing me their data! That's HUGE. I don't fuck with that. That's huge.
