HBO: True Detective

I think it was the way it ended. Maggie knew she was powerless to leave him, and the only way to finish it was to manipulate him by fucking Rust.

Plus Maggie had done a lot to keep the family together, and Marty had a second chance... then slept with Beth. She gave up on him, and wanted a fresh start with the kids.

Plus remember the scene where the kids leave Marty and Maggie on the couch, with Maggie just having found out he'd been cheating once again? I think the kids saw what Marty was like too.

I understand him losing his wife, but other than catching the one daughter with 2 boys, and o.k beating the piss out of them, I don't understand the estrangement from the kids. The pictures in post #83 are disturbing.

I think it was Maggie in a way not wanting the idea of him creeping back through the kids (Which he managed before, with the rollerskating scene) and also Marty himself realising what he'd done, and where he'd pushed his family too through his actions.

It seems to me that there is a lot to tie up in the last episode and I'm expecting a surprise. I thought the Yellow King was Rev. Tuttle but he is dead. They have been chasing someone since the first episode and based upon my extensive tv experience, I believe that the murderer won't be a new character introduced in the last episode.

And now I'm obsessively Googling theories.

This show has dug its way under my skin.

Holy. Shit.

That was intense.

Still processing everything, and about to re-watch the episode, but damn did they stick the landing. I didn't buy into many of the theories out there, but I did think Marty was going to suffer a terrible surprise regarding his family.

Anyway, the Yellow King ended up being a skin-crawlingly creepy bastard, and the whole Carcosa scene was amazing. I didn't expect the ending, but I'm satisfied with the way it turned out.

I want a Rust & Marty road trip. Their scenes in the car are awesome.

That's what I read as well. Sounded great until I got into this season and realized how much I like these two actors together. Between the "Dallas Buyers Club" and "True Detective" Mathew M has been great to watch lately. I just hope the next seasons can live up to this one.

Someone pointed out that he was taking his shirt off a lot.

Right with you.. still trying to take it all in. Going to re-watch it tonight after I get all this work out the way.

yeah, interesting to see both sides, that is, one married with kids, the other, crazy

love that scene when he bangs Woody's wife.....

There were some very hot women in the series.

great acting from both but Rust was the better character to play.

Think both actors deserve some serious credit here. Marty seemed like the more conventional character, but the way he was portrayed added a whole lot of complexity to it.

Sad to see Rust at the end of all of this, you can see he died a little when his little girl passed all those years back.

Best new show for HBO in a long time. Too bad it will be a short lived series.

It's supposed to be a short series. Next year's series will be about as short. Probably a few episodes longer, but still fitting a yearly cycle.

I really liked the ending. The fact that, after all the build up of the myths, we find just another creep beneath it all was, IMO, a great turn of events. So often, when we hear of such terrible events in real life, we envision great monsters in our minds, just to be able to comprehend the enormity of the horror. But, in reality, Charlie Manson was just another creep, and Jim Jones was just a manipulative as asshole. They took things to a level others would not, but there is nothing grand or awe inspiring about them. I thought TD did a fine job of conveying that. Our admiration and awe should be reserved for those who stand against the darkness, not those who revel in it.

Kudos to all involved. I am anxious to binge watch the whole series straight through, to pick up on some of the nuances I may have missed in weekly viewing.

check out Marty sniffing his fingers after Rust tells him he smells like pussy.

I agree, very well done. Including the ending.
