is there an "ignore this thread" option?

Is there any way to ignore specific threads?
As in, so they don't show up when clicking the 'new posts' button.
I'd be interested in having a way to ignore active threads that I have no interest in.

You can ignore the original poster of the thread, that also removes the thread from the new posts list

You don't. That's part of the point of someone ignoring you, they no longer want to see your posts.
