Both were/are terms of abuse and many equate the two. Elsewhere in the Western world socialism has a variety of forms and most do not threaten the stability of the state nor individual's freedoms, unlike the old-style German Democratic Socialist Republic that built the Berlin Wall. That was neither democratic nor socialist but Russian communist dictatorship.

Political labels within the US do not translate elsewhere.

If there are two educated people there seems to be no problem between EU/US political terms.
