Need some advice on my Re-Do of, "Another Love" By: RichardGerald

OK so, I'm pretty sure the answer is going to be "Suck it up, Princess."
But just in case I'm wrong, someone left me a comment with the bright idea to "Fix" "Another Love."
I read it and thought "OH FUCK YEAH!!! " So I did.
I did NOT read any of the other versions out there because I didn't want them to interfere with what I had in my head.
But once I was done writing it, I started reading through a few.
Now the last time I tried to do MY version of a story, it was “February Sucks” by GeorgeAnderson. He had an open policy so it was no big deal.
But Mr. Gerald? Not so much. I came across multiple mentions of "Have RichardGerald written permission."
Soooo wrote him a request about a week ago and still no (Yes/No/GoFuckYourselfHayden).

Am I hosed?

The short answer is yes, you should obtain the original author's permission before submitting a sequel or alternate version of his or her story.

I'm not familiar with the original story, but I did a quick search and my top three results were all variations of the original. All three variations included a preface that stated the author obtained permission from RichardGerald. It looks like he last published a story in 2023, which is relatively recently, so he may yet respond to your request. However, if he doesn't, my view is that it would unethical to publish your take on his story.

You can publish your idea, but not use RichardGerald's characters or exact plot. It then becomes your story.

Hey Annie,
That's a legitimate idea but it just wouldn't be the same.
The only reason I even wrote the thing was because someone asked me to.
If I changed things around, people would still know I got it from RG.
