Family, friends, and his childhood years:
  • He grew up on the beach. He was a surfer almost from the time he learned to walk.
  • He lived wherever there were good waves: California, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, and at least two dozen other places.
  • He wasn't an orphan per se, but he spent little time with immediate family after the age of 10:
    • Surfing became his life.
    • He would live with anyone anywhere so long as he could roll out of bed and run to the waves.
    • His parents trusted his independence. They supported him, financially and emotionally both, when he needed it.
Education:
  • He isn't ignorant, but he isn't well educated either.

  • The airplane in the sea is first mentioned here, Day 1, 0830 hours (10 and 1/2 hours after TLWO).
  • A survivor inside the plane's fuselage is first mentioned here, minutes later.
  • First Officer Victor Carlson swam to the fuselage and located the man here. Also in this post, an inflatable boat full of help arrived to help.
  • This is also when Victor realized that the man was wearing handcuffs.
  • Later, after the man's request to speak to the Captain, he revealed his name and a story that he'd been extradited from the US to Papua-New Guinea where he was supposedly wanted for white-collar crimes.
