hey hey hey! its been ages since I've started a new thread! :)
this is all about community service, volunteering.....serving and
helping the greater good!

For those who know me (and also those that don't), I volunteer
at a local agency that helps women and children affected by violence
(i.e. domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse) and for the
past 4 years (including this year) I've organized V-Day to help raise
money for the agency.

So.......what do you do to volunteer?

I really enjoyed transporting dogs from the killer to foster homes for a rescue agency. They went out of business, so to speak. I really miss doing that.

As for now, I volunteer my services to men (and women) in need

That stinks that the rescue agency you volunteered for went out of
business......maybe it was their lack of funding that caused them to close?

ok ok.......i know there are more of you super duper volunteers out there! :)

I volunteer to teach kids how to bowl on the weekends.

I think that's great! Getting kids involved w/ a sport, w/ the arts,
w/ helping the less fortunate, etc. is a wonderful thing! Kudos to you!

I've given up trying to volunteer.......I wanted to work with a literacy program but they only needed volunteers during the day. At the time I was working. Now that I've retired, they only need people in the evening.

I've called and/or signed up for several different agencies and I never receive a call.

I do purchase gifts for kids in foster care. The kids list the things they'd like to have and volunteers buy them. This year one of the gifts I bought was a science kit for a ten year old.

I think that's wonderful you purchase gifts for foster children! that's definitely a way of volunteering for sure! I know what you're talking about when you call diff. agencies and never get a call back.......the best thing I can say is to keep trying, esp. if its a cause you want to help with. One of my good friends was trying to get a volunteer spot helping w/ reading and she never got a call back even though she left a couple of messages for the one in charge of it....weird, but I told her to keep trying.

I gave up on the literacy thing. I told the lady that I had more than 30 years experience in the classroom and still didn't hear from them.

It's fun to go through the list of what kids want. You even get a handwritten thank you from the child after Christmas.

I play music at nursing homes for Alzhimer patients and shut ins. Have for years and I love it.

I'm very sorry to hear that the literacy volunteer thing didn't work out.

As for the gifts for the foster kids, that's great each of them send a note
to those who give them a little something for Christmas....very sweet!

I think that's wonderful! And I am sure that they appreciate it greatly! :)

Music can be a very powerful thing on people.
