Actual text from a WIP.

"I know, I know, but … you and Laurel were so cute together."

"Mom, why are we doing a whole page of introductory dialogue before the story even starts? All of this has to go."

You know how some people talk to themselves? I type to myself when I'm in the middle of writing something. Apparently. That second sentence is certainly intended for me as reader.

Now, I'm off to remove, or at least move, some of that dialogue.

There's an excellent reason to have a page of intro dialogue before the story starts. It pulls the reader in. We see so many stories with the two-thousand word backstory before we see a word of dialogue, that seeing some dialogue right off the bat makes it interesting.

As for writing to yourself, I do something similar if I think of something fun that I want to include later in the story, I'll make note of it a half page down so I don't forget it.

When I do it less spontaneously, I just use my word processor's comment feature.
