Otaku. Hmm closest English translation by feel is probably someone who is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about a topic or niche. You can be a densha otaku (train nerd), history otaku or like to dig into niche and interesting films of a genre. It's a pretty useful and nuanced word. Aficiando would be the closest equivalent but that doesn't really cut it.

Yeah you see nerd doesn't work for me because of its associations and connotations. Doesn't really capture the nuance. It's probably a fusion of nerd and aficiando but that's clumsy. As a translator, these are my battles...

I get it, but Nerd only have a negative connotation because of western philosophy. Aficionado is the original description of Nerd. A "specialist".
