Watching the total lunar eclipse at the crack of dawn this morning! The fact that it occurred on the winter solstice, during unprecedented icy weather, only a couple of nights after a spectacular meteor shower made me think that similar events would have had the ancients sacrificing their nearest and dearest to appease the gods.
