Hello all. I'm wondering if any women out there can comment on their inducing lactation experiences. Was your partner enthusiastic and supportive, or reluctant? It has long been a fantasy of mine, and I've decided to pursue but my partner seems rather bland about it. From what research I've gathered its best to start with herbs and consistent pumping/nipple stimulation? I was unable to breast feed my daughter 11 years ago because I wasn't producing enough milk. Will that be in issue in lactation activities now?

I've searched the topic on the forums here, read the threads, and am asking because nothing in them really answered my specific questions. Thanks for your time and input.

The best thing I can do is point you to a topic where one of our members laid out her journey. She was quite informative and would be open to questions if you have them.

You are looking for posts from Destined. as I recall there was another woman who joined the cause as well, the last few pages will have the most info from them.

I only "induced" in terms of trying to increase my supply while breastfeeding. My husband was supportive, but it was still a strain because I had to spend so much time and effort working at it. He was never a fan of getting milk in his mouth - part of that was feeling like he was taking away precious milk from our son, and I think the other part was it just squicked him for some reason.

If you had issues producing milk postpartum, you may very well have issues now. Then again, maybe you're "primed" for it and stress won't be a factor since you're not trying to produce enough to feed your baby.

FWIW, I found Oregon's Wild Harvest Fenugreek to be the most effective herb. Other brands of fenugreek have less of the milk-producing compound, according to a study done at Bastyr University (a renowned alternative health center), and the price is comparable. Speaking of price, because you have to take so much, the cheapest way to go is getting it from OWH in pound bags, then grinding it yourself to a powder. I measured the amount in a capsule, ground the whole seeds to the same consistency, then just dosed my homemade powder with a spoon. I can't recall the equivalency, but it could have been a teaspoon for 3 capsules or similar.

The other thing that was probably most effective was Domperidone (brand Motilium). You can't buy it in the US, so you're stuck having to buy it from an overseas pharmacy, and it's kind of pricey (but super effective and it doesn't come with the side effects of Reglan and the like). I bought multiple times from Inhousepharmacy (which is located in the South Pacific), but you can check to see if you can find another reputable source with good prices. When I bought, Inhousepharmacy guaranteed it'd get through Customs or they'd replace it for free. I've never heard of people having it seized, but the guarantee offers some peace of mind. I found it more effective than the Fenugreek and other herbs and foods I tried, though I feel it's best to use a combination of diet, herbs and medication in addition to tons of pumping.

CutieMouse is super knowledgeable about lactation if you have questions, BTW.

I hope that helps some!

Nipplemuncher, that thread was fantastic. She was very informative! Now I just need to find out if the nipple piercings will have a negative effect.

SweetErika, thank you for those tips. I will be checking that out before I start on my journey. I think the partner is getting more interested. I've been sending him pictures and threads on the topic to tease his senses. Grin.

You are welcome. I doubt the piercings will have any effect on lactation, though you may want to remove them while pumping/stimulating your nipples. When you do start lactating, you'll have to experiment to see if you can wear the piercings while expressing, however that may be in the moment.

Question

You don't mention being pregnant. Are you doing this for fun of adult breast feeding? It killed me when I was unable to breast feed my children because I wasn't producing enough milk. We thought about the medications to produce more but I was counseled about the side effects and one of them was increased risk of depression. I had had a bad depression and didn't want to go there again. I wanted to be there for the kids. I guess what I am saying is that look into and realize there are side effects to some of these medications. I wish you the best.
