Thank you for coming to read about the fictional world I built here. This is meant for anyone curious about the world-setting I may use in role-play or others.
OVERVIEW
The world is supposed to be as inclusive as is possible, in addition to everything available in the modern society, there is also the addition of magic and xenobiology.
Essentially, it's supposed to be compatible with most fantasy and modern scenarios, with themed area occupying different regions in the world.
MAGIC SYSTEM
The magic system in this world is based on the idea of "Aether". Aether is a polymorphous substance that could look like anything from a cloud to a crystal or invisible entirely. It is capable of storing and releasing energy, changing shape and nature. Usually, aether flow right through ordinary matter, but when energized, it is more prone to interaction with material objects, it is also possible to transmute the nature of aether so much that it becomes physical tangible.
An example where a magical being is explained by aether is this: a mage in this world would be someone who retains a substantial amount of aether in his/her body, which the mage might have acquired by absorbing the trace amounts of aether present in the atmosphere while he/she learned about magic. The mage stores aethereal energy in the body of aether within his/her body, and when needed, the mage can energize a sphere of aether taken from his/her aether reservoir, and fire it, causing the sphere to fly at the mage's enemy and explode, release the energy stored therein, this inflicts both material and aethereal damage.
Another important phenomenon explained by the system is that of a soul: for most sentient beings in this world, a small amount of aether can be found in the being's brain (or equivalent), of this small amount, a significant portion is a special subset of aether, known as "ectoplasm" or "soul-essence". While the creature is alive, the ectoplasm in its brain take on the shape of the nervous system, constantly updating itself to imitate the workings of the sentient being.
If the sentient being dies, there is a chance that the ectoplasmic body, or the soul, will survive the destruction of the brain, and linger on briefly as a ghost--a soul without a body. However, if the ghost is able to absorb aether of the right variety and abundance, it can persist much longer, eventually adapting to its new body become a wholly immaterial being. However, given aether's ability to interact with material objects, these ghosts can easily interact with the physical world.
A lich is considered a ghost-possessed corpse or puppet in this world.
The explanation for more complex magic is explained thus: ectoplasm, or soul-essence, has the ability to record instructions and guide the behavior of aether. It is possible for learned magicians to "program" a fragment of ectoplasm to perform a specific action, for example, an aether-filled crystal ball may be given the instruction "if touched by anyone beside a member to the magic academy, transmute aether within to be incendiary." This will cause the crystal ball to burst into flame when touched by a would-be thief. Similarly, other curses and spells can be made with ectoplasm-programming.
Demons and gods also appear in this world, although in the case of the gods, they are much less of a theological manifestations than overpowered magic-users. There are many such deities in this world, none of them correspond to real-world religion except in rare, superficial resemblances. They each rule over a region, and usually do not engage one another in conflicts. Also, due to the rarity and utility of ectoplasm/soul-essence, these deities often coexist with a population of sentient beings (commonly human). This allow the deities to either ask for their souls in exchange of supernatural power (as demons are inclined to do) or regularly tax small amounts of soul-essence from the populace under pretexts that ultimately rests on the difference of power between the deity and its subjects (as some gods tend to do.) Angels and magical priests are common byproducts of the latter behavior.
XENOBIOLOGY
Rather straight forward addition to the basis of the real world--organisms of most conceivable and reasonably realistic variations are permitted in this world, and any magical modification to the organisms will likely be explained away by the magic system.
HARD RULES
The following cannot exist in this world:
1: time travel: sorry, travelers. Also, instantaneous teleportation is considered time-travel by relativity, so, none of that either, but very-fast (near-light speed) teleportation is okay.
2: blatant violation of energy and momentum conservation laws; it basically means that you cannot create things from thin air or make things completely disappear. Of course, there are many round-about explanation for when you want to pull rabbits out of your hat that don't even need to be stated in most cases.
NOTES
If you stumbled across this thread without referral, first of all: welcome! ...and like I said, this post describes my world building for role-plays I might do. If it catches your attention, feel free to private message me for discussion or game-suggestion.
Thank you!
