Why do we call them "panties" for "women's" underwear, but simply "underwear" for men?

I don’t know the actual answer, but I think the word “panties” is much more feminine. Maybe that’s just because of the association.

I agree. But I think it's because that's what we've all associated with it. At some point somebody had to be like "we're gonna call them "panties" when they are for a woman. And that shit stuck. Language is fascinating!
