Do you drive a car? Your car is polluting the planet a lot worse than a smoker. Last two days in Chicago we had an air quality alert and it sure isn't from cigarettes. Shouldn't pick on smokers when your doing a lot more damage than they are

Not really a workable comparision, Joey ..... lot of people, me included, couldn't work without a car ..... but smoking is a purely personal choice, you do it or you don't, simple as that ..... I drive my car, it's not going to kill you, but you smoking in the same room as me could well kill me ......

Joey, I wasn't "picking on" smokers. I was stating facts that had nothing to do with the air quality, just their quality of life. But to each his own. They want to kill themselves, more power to them. I would just think they cared enough about their families to want to actually stay ALIVE for them.

Yes, I do drive a car. A HYBRID! Enough said? Would ya like us to go back to horse and buggy days? Give me another alternative. I know, how about actually ELECTING government officials that CARE about the environment instead of having the polluters in their pockets? Might be a start, ya think?

All this talk about smoking. YUCK! I can say that, I did it for YEARS. 3 packs a day. If I can quit (did it cold turkey, btw) anyone can.

Fact: The physical withdrawl from nicotine is 14 days. After that it's all psychological.

Fact: When you first quit, especially the first year you feel like pure shit. All the toxins that have been stored up in your body from all the cigarettes are now LEAVING your body.

Fact: It's a filthy, ugly, disgusting habit and when you're doing it, you smell, really, really bad. Everyone around you can smell you coming a mile away. Been there, done that. Not trying to insult anyone, just telling you how everyone around you feels.

Fact: If I gave you a glass of 409, or turpenine, or gasoline would you drink it. No of course not, it's poisonous, it will kill you. Why would you want to smoke something that WILL kill you? Is it just because it's not instantaneous? It's actually a very ugly death. Saw my Father die from it.

Yep, you got it. I'm one of those annoying ex-smokers. :D Sorry, just wanted to give ya'll something to think about. If it will help one person quit so they can be there for their children when they grow up, then I hope it helps.

Ok soapbox away. Light 'em if you got 'em.

I too used to smoke. I am forever grateful that I quit. I quit cold turkey, no gum, no patches.....hummmm that take tell you something about my personality. LOL The decision to quit smoking is very personal. And I will be glad to talk to anyone who needs the emotional support to quit. I can't help but post the following song.....the devil made me do it.

Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette Written by Merle T ravis and Tex Williams
Now I'm a feller with a heart of gold
And the ways of a gentleman I've been told
The kind of guy that wouldn't even harm a flea
But if me and a certain character met
The guy that invented the cigarette
I'd murder that son-of-a-gun in the first degree

It ain't cuz I don't smoke myself
And I don't reckon that it'll harm your health
Smoked all my life and I ain't dead yet

But nicotine slaves are all the same
At a pettin' party or a poker game
Everything gotta stop while they have a cigarette

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

Now in a game of chance the other night
Old Dame Fortune was a-doin' me right
The kings and the queens just kept on comin' round

And I got a full and I bet 'em high
But my bluff didn't work on a certain guy
He just kept on raisin' and layin' that money down

Now he'd raise me and I'd raise him
I sweated blood, gotta sink or swim
He finally called and didn't even raise the bet

So I said "aces full Pops how 'bout you?"
He said "I'll tell you in a minute or two
But right now, I gotta have me a cigarette"

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hates to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

(Ah, smoke it! Hah! Yes! Yes! Yes!)

The other night I had a date
With the cutest little girl in the United States
A high-bred, uptown, fancy little dame

She loved me and it seemed to me
That things were 'bout like they oughta be
So hand in hand we strolled down lover's lane

She was oh so far from a cake of ice
And our smoochin' party was goin' nice
So help me cats I believe I'd be there yet

But I give her a kiss and a little squeeze
And she said, "ah, Marty, excuse me please
I just gotta have me another, cigarette"

And she said, smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

S, if I wasn't an ex-smoker I wouldn't say anything about it. I too quit, cold turkey. Smoked 3 packs a day when I quit. I couldn't even imagine spending the money on them that they cost today.

You're right, it's a very personal decision to quit and I've helped a few people through it since I did it. All the nagging in the world won't do anything. It has to be the individuals choice or it won't work. Same as rehab being mandatory for someone on drugs. Unless they want to quit, they won't, no matter what.

BTW, the song is great! ;)

I couldn't have said it better myself...you are so right.

My state was awarded millions in the great tobacco lawsuits but, funny thing, none of the money went to help the smokers. No one seems to know where the money went.....and while our legislators were talking out of one side of their mouths condemning smokers THEY were smoking in the state Senate Chambers. It was only yesterday that they stopped :(

Today I was pissed off about 2 things

That couple in FL who abused their adopted children, oh wait only 5 of the seven

and my stupid neigbor who is BLARING country music in his driveway (at least he is taking down the Christmas lights)and the retarted music that is keeping the baby awake

and now its 3 because I quit smoking for 8 months (cold turkey) and now I smoke as much if not more and I want to quit, but I can't chew the gum or wear the patch and Zyban makes me sick.

I hear ya Joey. I'm telling you, our forefathers are turning in their graves seeing what's become of the government they founded.

I don't condemn smokers. I condemn the tobacco companies and the advertisers. For God's sake, they take medicines that actually HELP people with arthritis off the market because 1 in 700 people taking it has a heart attack. I want them to tell me why they still allow the sale of cigarettes, which kill everyone?

Ok, I gotta put the soapbox away or I'll never stop! *lol* But yep, I certainly do agree with you, 100%. :)

I quit cold turkey over a year ago when I was real sick with a cold...worked pretty good....I was so sick that when I did light one up I choked :)

I still miss the habit though...I like the smell :(

Oh hon, believe me the smell of them is one thing that helped me quit. But ya know what? The day will come when you will PUKE when you smell them.

I know! Everyone talks about how bad it stinks, but when I was a non-smoker I loved the smell. I don't like having to run out and buy smokes, I don't like how much they cost, I don't like what I know they do to my body, BUT I love lighting one up and relaxing. Nothing goes better with my coffee, or after dinner, or after sex, or when drinking. Stupid nicotine.

Yup I used to smoke too.... I quit with the help of the patch.
Sad to say, it wasn't a want-to thing... I HAD to quit as I developed a tumor in my left lung that necessitated major surgery to remove it. you can see the top of the scar in my
< AV.

To anyone who smokes... I beg you to quit before you die for lack of trying.

I so agree. Even though I don't smoke, its MY choice and if you want to its up to you. If your smoking bothers me I'll just leave :)

Well.......you are very lucky to be here.......I quit healthy....I loved it and I still dream of smoking....I quit because of my niece and nephew....they asked me why I smoked......and there is not one good reason to tell a child why you smoke.....So I try to live by example.....well at least most of the time LOL
