What to do now that Skype is going to shutter?

Hello all,

I just received the devastating news that Skype will officially shutter in May 2025. I’ve been using it since I was a tween so this is hitting me pretty hard. Where are you all going to stay connected or phone now? Something that keeps tabs of your past conversations and you can remain anonymous would be optimal. I’m really sad about it though. Any thoughts or suggestions? A lot of people don’t use it anymore apparently, I thought it was really helpful though.

Just saw this when logging into my skype It does say your profile will move to Teams and all of your contacts. I assume you can still delete and add pics, chats, videos, etc just like with Skype?

I don’t want to give Microsoft any more of my sensitive data. Skype seemed like a safe haven. But maybe in just being a delusional analog babe.

That’s a bummer I really liked it. I use telegram and google chat. I never really enjoyed kik all that much.

Yeah me neither. I’ve heard a few people say telegram. Seems like the safe bet.

Skype has a huge presence in the massive call centers they have in that country, and the resistance to using anything other than Skype has been fierce. And don't get me started on the "bitextual" Filipinas (Skype/Teams dual users). This is an abomination.

There are so many alternatives now that Skype was never really my go-to messaging or video call app. Most of my friends use WhatsApp, and it just feels more convenient. Even Academized https://academized.com/write-my-personal-statement, a service I use a lot, relies on different communication channels, so it’s no big deal for me. At this point, Skype feels a bit outdated compared to other options out there

Feeling the same. Think I'll be using snapchat since telegram requires a (non voip) phone number to register (way too invasive).
Google meet may be an option too but I don't know anyone else there to play with yet.

It's a real bummer there are no private chat options anymore. Why does everything need to be tracked now? It sucks! I would say it would be fine if there was an option to pay like $5 a year for a private chat. But then you are paying, so how private would it really be... Ugh!!!

Wow, that's such an informative take. I wonder if the USD to their currency is having any effect on why they didn't take a second look at international relations or usability of the app. Either way, I would like to dub myself as an honorary Filipina because I am very resistant to move onto anything else too.

Literally the words out of my mouth! What is up with the subscriptions, need to have everyones information, tracking of personal faces etc??? I get that anyone could be a threat to national security, but there literally was less terrorism back in the day because you just let people be. No one felt the need to go all haywire because we trusted that people were not watching us. This got off track, but I feel this on such a deep level. Like I promise majority of us are having consensual relations with one another and don't want to terrorize anyone!

Like? I'm speaking to phone community people most people who phone have Skype and it's a very simple process with very little privacy invasion which a lot of phoners prefer/ require.

The lovesne app has great vid calling and group chat features. And, if you have one of their toys you can let strangers control it during vid play.

The tough part is still meeting fun people who enjoy talking filthy and getting off on cam with strangers in the first place though

I have used Signal for over a decade now.

Not a single spam call or text in all that time.

It is just a basic intuitive messaging app with a focus on privacy and while a # is required to use it doesn't reveal your # UNLESS you want your # revealed

I was thinking of signal. Signal seems like a great alternative.

I used signal but have forgotten my password. Kik is so full of bots don't use it anymore. Google chat scans your pictures and I think the chat too for viruses I like using g chat. . I like using skype too. both of the last two sites have good cam too. Don't ever think that the sites say they don't see your stuff. Unless its enquripted at both ends and you need a key to open on the receiving end. Pretty sure someone is listining and watching. Even vpn's from the USA. now have a back door for the gov. to go in. So Im not worried, someone somewhere knows what going on. Even the person you cam with can record you and do whatever they want with it. Oh well life goes on. It's the possers that try and get you to send them pictures, saying their a lady but a guy. You can figure that out quickly when the picture they send you Google it. or you don't hear back after you send pictures. You can pretty much know then that it wasn't a lady in the first place. Helps to get that figured out if they will or wont cam with you. Ok Im done ranting. Hope everyone finds there place to talk and cam. I know I have found a couple ladies that will cam to prove they are a real lady. Damn its fun caming with a lady when I can mmmmmmm
