I have looked in the Blank Manual but the posts about this were from awhile ago, just wanted to survey those out there for any new info that can help me.
Soo here's the deal:
This is my first yeast infection and I have been dealing with this infection for over a MONTH now. I got a yeast infection - the whole deal, discharge (no odor), major itchyness/burning.
1. Took Vagistate 3 - cleared up discharge but still itchy.
2. So I went to the doc he took a swab and gave me a 3-day perscription for terconazole, took 2 days worth
3. when they called and told me I had a bacterial infection so I then took Metrogel - 5 days worth, although on day 4 of the Rx I got my period and had heavy bleeding.
4. Still itcky ... so I went back to the doc (have a yeast again) and again took the 3 day terconazole (although I took it for 4 days ...remember #2, I had 1 day of left over meds.)
5. Called the doc again this week, still itchy, they gave me 2 doses of Difulcan, have now taken both. The last dose last night and today I am still itchy and ... MISERABLE...HELP ME PLEASE

this isn't much help, but every little bit helps right?

i read that eating yogurt is good because it has good bacterias in it that help fight the bad ones... otherwise, i reccomend googling bacterial vaginosis... that is what you have right? i don't remember much about it, so i'd just tell you to google it, and you can find alot of info on it. you could also look up holistic remedies for it. i think there's one involving garlic and dental floss, but i'm not sure exactly... i also read that you can put plain yogurt inside you, but i'd look it up, because i'm not completely sure on my facts.

try not to scratch... are you taking an internal medication AND an external cream? the external cream helps alot with the itch, and there's this monistat day or night that is a capsule you insert, mabye it will help because it stays inside better than the creams.

Yogurt is the thing to have, lots and lots of,not those fruity stuff! just plain yogurt.

just don't put it in you 'down there'. You'll end up with a mess and infection worse than you've got now

Poor thing. I only had one once for a few days and it was miserable enough. I've heard wearing underwear to bed and baths are two things to avoid. But it sounds like you have something besides a normal yeast infection going on. I hope your doctor can figure it out.

Even if she puts it down there, there would be no problem!
yogurt has maney uses!

there would be a problem. It's a really bad idea to introduce any foreign body into yourself. Messing up the pH of your vagina like that is just dangerous. The vinegar bath is at least diluted.

Putting yoghurt into your vagina will give you a worse infection. DO NOT DO IT

Thanks everyone!
OK soooo I think the vinegar bath sounds interesting, might try that, a little less itchy today, BUT, I got my period today (about 10 days too early) I think my body is all messed up from the meds and the infection (normally I take no meds at all). I am not sticking garlic up in me, I don't care if it does work, garlic goes in my mouth not my cootchie! Also not sticking yogurt in me, although I have been eating a lot of yogurt it has been the yummy fruity kinds, am going to try the icky plain stuff today. This is the 2nd day of the 2nd dose of Diflucan and although I am a wee bit itchy I can tell a difference. I hope this works...next steps:
1. Go and get cream meds just in case
2. Icky plain yogurt
Thanks guys keep all your hints and tips comming!

Hi , I've never posted here before , mainly just been exploring the site. My college roomie had major yeast issues , and she finally found something that worked. Go to the drugstore and look in the vitamin section for acidophyllis.
I think it comes in tabs and capsules. It is the concentrated form of the active cultures found in yogurt. Take these regularly and it should clear up. You can also insert these in your vagina to relieve the itching and burning.
Good stuff !

Normally, I'd completely agree with you, but women have used plain, active culture yogurt to treat yeast infections successfully for many years. In lieu of yogurt, I insert acidophilous tablets (one at a time, as far up as possible and use a pantiliner, of course), and it clears the infection right up. My doctors have endorsed both, in addition to a plain water-vinegar douche (none of that commercial crap, but you can get the commercial kits and replace the liquid with diluted vinegar).

Juni, take a look at your bath and body products, as some can cause infection. Make sure nothing perfumed is getting close to your vagina (wash with plain old water), included scented pantiliners. It could also be your laundry products, so try switching to the ones without dyes or perfumes.

Make sure you're wearing clean, cotton panties, and follow the advice of not sleeping in them.

Take acidophilous pills daily, as they're great for digestion, as well as your vagina.

Your doctor should also be looking into underlying causes like Diabetes, so if s/he hasn't suggested further testing, ask for it.

There is nothing wrong with use of yogurt down there!
You could even check with your g.p.

If the usual yeast infection cures are not working, there could be an underlying cause. Insist on bloodwork to rule out some disease process that could be at work.

Hormonal changes can also contribute - have you recently started or stopped birth control pills?

Meantime, don't wear jeans or tight pants. Anything that both traps moisture and creates friction in the area only exacerbates the problem. Only wear cotton panties.

Yogurt (eaten regularly) can help you properly regulate yeast to avoid infections, but I doubt it will help clear up a stubborn infection. I'm not familiar with topical use, so can't comment.

Acidophilus really does work.

I've only had a few yeast infections in my life and they cleared up easily but when my daughter was a baby she got a lot of ear infections. The Dr would prescribe antibiotics (which of course can cause yeast infections) for her ears and she'd get a horrible yeast infection almost instantly. It didn't matter if I used yeast cream from day one or not....she Still got the infection. It would get so bad that the Dr would take her off the prescription before she had even finished it. This of course would result in her getting another ear infection (because we never finished the medication) which would result in another terrible yeast infection.....it was a vicious circle.

Finally I tried acidophilus. It cleared up her yeast infection almost instantly and she finally was able to finish a whole prescription of antibiotics for her ears and hasn't had an ear infection (or yeast infection actully) since.

I agree with those that say applying yogurt directly to the genitalia area is completely safe (plain yogurt, not something with fruit!) A very common holistic approach to healing yeast infections is to insert a "yogurt tampon" which you can make by filling an empty tampon tube with yogurt and sticking it in the freezeer a few hours to harden. Insert like a tampon and I guarantee it will work better than any of the meds you are taking. It is messy, of course, so keep that in mind.

And always good to have some tea tree soap on hand...The Body Shop sells it by the bar (which you can order online). A few days of washing with tea tree soap and everything will be back to normal.

good luck!

I agree with the acidophilious (SP?) stuff but I've known many women to seriously compromise their health by yoghurting themselves

Fresh yogurt is like anti biotics, older yogurt becomes acidic, greek style yogurt(sheep's milk) is the best one to use.
My father who was a cobra helicopter pilot, had ditched into sea maney years ago and he drank alot of sea water due to the impact of the helicopter and when he was picked up by a fishing boat,he said the fisher men gave him lots and lots of yogurt to eat to stop any stomach infections from the dirty sea water,They also applied yogurt as he said to his face which needed 20 stiches later(not from yogurt..lol).
Having said all these,a doctor is the best person to talk to,since you think it is yeast infection, but what if it is something else? :)

Yep, I was definitely getting one last night (confirmed by the doc a few days ago, but it wasn't symptomatic then, so she said to wait on treating). After seeing this thread, I popped in an acidophilous tablet and downed several, and have had NO symptoms all day. Amazing stuff that is! :D

I know someone who is dealing with a yeast infection for years (!!!) already. For the longest time (for starters) she did not know that's what it was. Her doctors sent her away clueless too (go figure).

After she had confided in me about her problem I did not know what it could be at first. Then, after reading about it I figured out it sounded a lot like a yeast infection. Of course, at that point, she was dealing (or not to be honest) with it for years and years already.

I think she finally got some medicine but is not rid of the infection yet. Last time I spoke to her it was a few months after she had started the medicine. What I know was also very important in her case: she could not eat any sugar. The bacteria in a yeast infection feed on sugar and only need the smallest amount. So it was no sugar at all anymore for her. I must check how she's now and hope she's okay, but I know that even with the medicine and no-sugar-whatsoever-diet it was not gone after a few months...

Did she get checked for Diabetes and other metabolic disorders, M's girl? Apart from the sugar, there has to be an underlying cause for that much infection.

I'm not sure. I also don't know what the status is since I haven't spoken to her in a while. I'll make sure to ask her and mention this next time. Thanks.

You Chicks are awesome! Thanks for all this invaluable information! I am still working through this. I seem to be gettin better and have almost completely cut downon all sugars just in case. I think stress has something to do with this as well and I am majorly stressed. What I worry about is this...I am getting it undercontrol and I am getting better, but what if, after my period, it doesn't go away. I can't swallow a pill, unless I crush it up, which is why I originally didn't go on Difulcan, I wish I would have a 3-5 day dose plus the cream right afterwards and I think I would have knocked this thing quickly.

I am lucky in that I never had a yeast infection in my life. As far as I know anyway, although I remember one time when I had this period of having a lot of white, thicker than usual, 'fluid', but that was so long ago and I would never have guessed what it was at that time. If it was a yeast infection it went away all by itself again, I guess, and never returned.

I hear that is you had a yeast infection once, it is more likely to happen again to you (return). I'm not sure if that's at all true (I bet Erika knows).

Juni, you say you have almost completely cut out all sugars, but from what I know (from my friend) is that if it's really bad (like in her case) even one grain of sugar can be enough to feed the bacteria again. That is very discouraging, or it would be for me. I hope your infection is a mild one and will go away soon, never to return!

It's next to impossible to completely cut out all sugar. Did your friend need to cut out natural sugar and added sugar?

I'm on a severely reduced sugar diet due to Acanthosis Nigricans
