Ex-Harvard professor Charles Lieber convicted of lying about China ties
By Mark Moore
December 22, 2021

A former Harvard University chemistry professor was found guilty Tuesday of lying about his ties to China and not reporting income paid to him by a Chinese-run recruitment program.

Charles Lieber, 62, the former chairman of the Ivy League school’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department, was convicted in Boston federal court of two counts of making false statements, two counts of filing a false income tax return, and two counts of failing to report income from foreign bank and financial accounts.

Without Harvard’s knowledge, Lieber became a “strategic scientist” for the Wuhan Institute of Technology in central China and participated in Beijing’s Thousand Talents Program from 2012 to 2015.

The program was designed to recruit people with high-level knowledge of foreign technology and intellectual property to China.

As part of the recruitment program, the Wuhan institute paid Lieber $50,000 a month and living expenses of up to $150,000, as well as giving him more than $1.5 million to establish a research lab.

Wonder if they’ll charge him with FARA violations?

Isn't that what we would expect them to do? I'm sure Taiwan has done things similar.

How long until you "find" a connection to hunter?

Yes, China is actively mining technology from other countries through university programs. I was aware of this happening in the late 60s and that Chinese-sponsored graduate students were being closely scrutinized in the States. Was quite aware of what the Chinese do in even more espionage terms when it hit my own office (the Larry Chin case). It has to be acknowledged that the United States has always engaged in this sort of datamining too.

Lol....woo, woo...caught one!

Now, ya know Righturd is thinking only 330,000,000 more to go...less the 71 million patriots. 😁

If what he did was so great and not unusual, why did he lie to the government about it?

.
Just think of how many more of these traitorous tax cheats we could catch if President Biden's Build Back Better Framework was passed, and the IRS was beefed up.

Maybe THAT ^ is the real reason republicans and a few "democrats" like Manchin and Sinema don't want the bill to pass.

Hmmmmm........

Brue I know asking someone to tak one for the team is asking a shoel fucking lot if you were alive to be aware what was going on in the 60's on that level maybe you need to just find the escape hatch and take yours with you. I mean shit, you predate desegration by two generations. Hitler was likely alive when your parents got busy. I normally use this on the right but Christ. I have a hard time justifying Gen X right now and you are barely egible for Boomer Status!

Don't see why not. He had no government secrets to pass along. He's a chemist -- academic, not governmental.

Industrial secrets can be (and have been vis-a-vis Chinese information gathering) more strategically important than most other kinds of secrets governments have. The open doors mentality of the American system makes academic science ripe ground for industrial espionage.

I'm sorry, is there an English-language translation available for that?

But, he's not an industrial chemist either. An academic has no secrets to sell.

There Peck goes again....

Saying something soooo ignorant and argumentative just to prolong an interaction.

JFC

Who knows.... probably for money....never heard of the phrase, "money is the root of all evil?"

And who cares....so long as he was caught for doing something criminal and dealt with....next!

It seems that the sole point of this thread is to associate Ivy League liberalism with Chinese Communism.
