Day 26: A song from the 80s

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music For A Found Harmonium.
(Not this harmonium, but one was found by Simon Jeffes - chief Penguin - in a street in Japan and he then wrote this song on it. Much copied, even turned into a rave tune and now thought to be a traditional piece of music. No, it's from the, much maligned, 80's)

Day 26- A song from the 80's

The other day I spoke about Helloween, and how they in the late 80s released Keeper of the Seven Keys, an album which alone marked the beginning of european power metal. The song I linked then, though, was from a later album which almost spelled the death of the band.

So I'd like to rectify that and share one of the songs which, in contrast, kickstarted Helloween's meteoric rise to fame. I Want Out is one of the earliest recordings from the double album (released in two parts), and speaks of beginnings and endings. Michael Kiske, one of the greatest singers in metal, debuts here at just 19 years old, on a track written by guitarist Kai Hansen who wanted to leave the band which, following Keeper, he did. It took almost 30 years before he rejoined the band, but that's a story for another day.

One legend begins
Another one ends

Helloween - I Want Out
No, no, no,
Leave me alone
I want out
To live my life alone

Day 26 - Song from the 80s

I am continuing to focus on Jewish artists as well. For the 80s, Diamond Dave himself, David Lee Roth. I am far more a fan of David's solo work than post DLR Van Halen, and this is my favorite. Never a single, there is a depth to it that I love, musically and lyrically. "Jazz it up or play it slow, it's still the only song I know."

"Thinkin' 'bout you and me. Hello. Goodbye"

"Ladies Nite in Buffalo?" David Lee Roth
