Day 14: A song by an artist who has grown on you over time

I heard a lot of hype about this song in particular and I have a bad habit of being contrary so I didn't listen until a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure that I anticipate Sabrina becoming my favorite pop girly but this one is a catchy tune with super cute aesthetics.
Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso
Omg, I just heard her other popular song the other day and thought... she's cute! I need to listen to some more of her stuff.

Apparently, if you leave Youtube music going long enough, all roads lead to Macklemore. I didn't think much of him at first - I thought he was mostly novelty songs and fluff. But there's some real depth in his work, and even his lighter songs have quality musicianship behind them. Plus, I'll never say no to any collaboration with Foxy Shazam's Eric Nally.
"Downtown" - Macklemore
The problem Macklemore and Ryan Lewis faced was getting popular with their silliest song. But he is a solid storyteller, and very transparent on his problems without romanticizing them. He is very self-aware in his writing. Not the most complex rhyme schemes, but solid, and his flow can go from laid back to blazing fast, such as the song that gave the album it's title. I love the song with Eric, but his collaboration with Mary Lambert on his same-sex marriage song (which, unfortunately, came out before his big hit, so it never got the traction it should have) is beautiful. I hate the Grammies, for a lot of reasons, and Kendrick Lamar may have been robbed, but Drake should shut up the whining he has been doing since 2014. The Heist was a better album than Nothing Was the Same in both writing and performing. There, I said it.

Not so much an artist, but a whole genre. Even though I grew up in the 80s, I've always had a heartfelt hatred for synth pop. The cold, digital sounds, the ridiculous hairstyles, the makeup, the non-showmanship on stage - everything about it appalled me and was in stark contrast to the music I liked.

All this was long gone, a revival seemed inevitable, and only then I realised there were a lot of good songs coming out of the synthesizers and drum machines. Feelings from melancholy to joyful optimism, catchy tunes, meaningful lyrics, influences from all over the music world. I still prefer Gloria Jones' original of "Tainted Love" over Soft Cell's dreadful cover, but here is a synth pop song I actually enjoy - representative of many others.

Howard Jones - New Song

Day 15: A song that reminds you of something you did this weekend

Been on my own this weekend, and I'm a bit under the weather.
So, how does a lonely girl entertain herself?
Well...

Linda Sundblad - Oh Father (I've been touching myself)
(Slight warning, this song's a tad sacrilegious. In case that bothers anyone)

I did a lot of laundry but I do love this line...

You don't really need to find out
What's going on
You don't really want to know
Just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Dirty Laundry - Don Henley

Day 15: A song that reminds you of something you did this weekend

The majority of my weekend was already described in the first two posts!
My biggest "accomplishment" was similar to lavendersilk's laundry adventures...
And the "highlight" of my weekend very much echoes the entertainment that vagrantx found...
But my number one activity was getting caught up on some overdue rest after an exceptionally busy week at work.

"Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Runnin' everywhere at such a speed
'Til they find there's no need..."

The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping

I went up to Boston yesterday to visit a friend who moved to the area and showed her around. We strolled around this amazing city that I love so dearly. As we strolled through (and every time I stroll through) the Public Garden I couldn't help but reminisce about the time back in the mid 90s, I was walking through on my way to work and I saw a film crew shooting a scene with Robin Williams and some unknown actor. I remember it being on the news at the time that Robin Williams was shooting a movie in the area, little did I know that I was watching the iconic scene from Good Will Hunting that made a simple park bench famous. So my choice for today is the lovely Miss Misery from Elliot Smith.

Kraftwerk - Tour De France
It's July... it's the Pyrenees. OK, i did go out for a bit, but i hurried home on Saturday to see the last climb and watched the whole stage live on tv yesterday. Vive le Tour. The only sad bit is i didn't manage to sort a trip to see any of it this year, but i had other things happening. Next year - more than likely as the start is a train ride away from Londres.
