Day 6: A song that's over 5 minutes long

Ok, so once again, I'm going to try to.play catch up. I'm going to go back to the 31st because Fuck 2024. But I will start with today. This is a song that screams 80s synth. The lyrics are absolutely amazing, imo and it reminds me of some of the songs @UnquietDreams has posted. @MandaPandaa can't stop listening to this one:

The The - The Twilight Hour

Matt Johnson is a genius, btw and this album doesn't have a bad song on it.

Day 5: A cover song that’s better than the original (you can post both)

I wasn't sure I even liked this song on first listen but it definitely grew on me. After seeing the video, I fell in love (guy are visual).

Cover:

The original (which you never want your GF/wife selecting at a karaoke bar 🤭)

Day 6: A song that's over 5 minutes long
The Suburbs - Arcade Fire

I’ve always loved these lyrics. It captures seeing things again through my kid’s eyes while also feeling awful about bringing her into this dumpster fire of a world we live in. Don't worry, I tend to remain optimistic despite said dumpster fire :)

So can you understand?
Why I want a daughter while I'm still young
I wanna hold her hand
Show her some beauty before all this damage is done

This is a topic that’s come up in conversation a couple times recently. Beautiful.

Day 6: A song that's over 5 minutes long

I had an almost religious experience listening to this song while out of my mind on shrooms 😅 Not only is the multi layered beat out of this world, Kimi's voice, and the video, and just... argh. Everything. I love it.

Also the video's a casual normalization of women in gaming, and breaking gender norms!! And that we don't only play candy crush and farmville

Little Dragon - Lover Chanting

Day 31: A song to end the year

So for me, 2024 was a Rollercoaster ride. There were some great moments but way to much sickness and death for my liking. I fear it's not going to improve anytime soon.
I'm normally an optimist but this year made me angry at times, so this is the way I choose to say goodbye:

Two songs in one post! 😳 Naughty!

The sin was not posting 2 songs, it was reminding us the band Toto existed.

Day 5: A cover song that’s better than the original (you can post both)
Yesterday I heard this song and my first thought was… Bieber covered a Josiah and the Bonnevilles song?? Of course, that didn’t make any sense; my brain took a second but sorted out that the version I knew was a cover. I found this cover by Josiah about a year or so ago and I have listened to it SO much. It’s one of those songs that I often restart as soon as I finish it. I love acoustic guitar with harmonica, but the lyrics… the lyrics always just hit me so hard. Simple, yet so powerful. And there’s something about Josiah’s voice when he sings it.

When I was grabbing a video to post, I came across this live version and learned a little more. Josiah lost his mom to cancer in 2009 and when he heard this song in a bar, the lyrics reminded him of her. He talked about the messages online he gets about the song and people’s connections to it and people they’ve lost. At the show, he played an additional chorus at the end and told everyone he’d step back from the mic—he’d sing it for his mom and the crowd could sing for whomever they needed to. Moments like that at shows are so powerful. Pure connection with music and each other.

“Youngblood thinks there’s always tomorrow…”

Josiah and the Bonnevilles - Ghost (cover)

Justin Bieber - Ghost
(Only redeeming thing about this original version is that Diane Keaton plays his grieving grandmother in the music video)
I don't need the Biebs version to know the cover is better.

I enjoyed the song so much, I was almost tempted to listen to the original....almost. Why ruin a great thing? Thanks for sharing. Hadn't heard that before. I love it!.
