Those times on the crossword just blow me away. I’m usually around a minute. Any tricks or tips?

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but once I'm fairly certain I have one going across (ideally 1 across), I switch to the ones going down. Sometimes if I'm lucky, it'll take care of itself before I get to the rest of the clues.
