I don't have it set to hard mode but I always play it that way. On a few occassions I have mistakenly played a word that wouldn't be allowed on hard. So I probably should just go ahead and change the setting.

I just have it on standard mode, but I only reuse letters that aren't in the word, or put green letters in the wrong place if I'm really really stuck

whats the difference? i never use the hints, ive never changed the settings...
