I googled the movie - the synopsis didn't sound so depressing as much as it wasn't a satisfying ending. Why depressing??

Not entirely sure, I guess all the exposition prior to the ending set up an emotional narrative that I can't recall.
To me the ending was fine. I see why people might find it unsatisfying because it's certainly unconventional in comparison to typical romance/drama movies since it lacks any clear climax. It sort of just, um, happens.
