Favorite brand of colored pencils?

Ooh, good question.

My niece asked to get some art stuff for Christmas and I know nothing about that. So, what should I get? She likes to draw, but isn't all seriously artsy (at least yet). She's 10. Should I get some special pencils, markers, what might be good?

I mostly use Prismacolor. Derwent pencils are good too, but I mostly have experience with water color pencils from Derwent. I don’t know if it’s worth it to buy something like this for a 10 year old. Soft core pencils are great for color saturation and blending. Maybe a basic small set to give it a try. :)

How do you feel about wax crayons and pastels?

Also, realism or idealism? Which do you sway more towards, and if you don’t mind elaborating, why do think you feel as you do about this?

Wax crayons and pastels are fine enough. Pastels have a lovely feel that I haven’t touched in years.

I would like to say realism, but I definitely sway towards idealism more. The idea of portraying something false doesn’t sit well with me. But I see a lot of things I just don’t think are to my standards and will change them to better suit my personal ideals if given the chance. I think my ideals are warped, so I’m working on that.

Do you lurk any threads here? Which threads do you always check out when you come to Lit?

Consistently? No, I don’t think so. The threads I post in are basically the ones I look at the most. I check out the blurts threads the most. Mostly because the topic is ever changing so it stays interesting. I avoid picture threads and tend to skip threads that start to become picture threads.

What is your spirit animal?

It’s a toss up between a rabbit and a cat I think. Rabbit as a prey animal is consistently vigilant for predators and good at running away.

Cat is what I would like it to be. Moody and sleeping a lot during the day. Laying in sunspots when it’s too cold. Territorial. Mean seemingly for no reason.

I can’t decide. Maybe I’m not supposed to?

Hey, good to see you back. ^

Meek, are you comfortable this time around on Lit?

Comfortable?

Hm.

It’s hard to gauge my time here in terms of comfort. In relative anonymity there’s some comfort. I can express things here that I can’t elsewhere. And I can engage without needing to censor my language regardless of the topic. That is comfortable I think.

What's your daily beauty routine? You've always seemed to know so much about all things beauty and look so pretty and put together that I'm imagining it must be extensive! :)

Thanks, I do try to take care of things, but I definitely have my off days.

I think my routine has been paired down. I used to worry about double cleansing, oil cleansing, lotion/toner, serum and moisturizer. These days it’s simple with some fun stuff like sheet masks purely for relaxing and not for any long lasting benefit.

Night:
I start with Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser
St. Ives (flavor of the moment Rose and Aloe) for physical exfoliation 1-2 times per week. I have used chemical exfoliants, but the scrubs are more satisfying and seem to be better for me.
Cerave PM Facial moisturizing Lotion (not always used, but using more on outer areas of the face where skin is more dry during the cooler drier weather).
I pat Sweet Chef Vitamin A Serum Shot on my cheeks and nose.
I finish with at least four drops of rose hip oil. I use rose hip oil for my skin every day, it’s the most constant in my routine. I like to put a little through the ends of my hair while it’s wet, too. Rose hip oil just kind of works for everything. :)

If for some reason I take too much time between washing and moisturizer, I will spritz rose water on my face to add moisture before applying rose hip oil.

Morning:

If I did everything at night I typically don’t wash my face in the morning (maybe just rinse with water if needed). If I didn’t for some reason, then usually just wash and moisturize as I would at night. I apply sunscreen if venturing outside.

Writing it out makes me feel like it isn’t as simple anymore. (^_^)a

So, I wonder, if the pyl shows her devotion by getting marked upon the PYLs request, what would you accept as sign of devotion from a PYL? Is it the same sign - a permanent marking? Is there such a sign at all that you would care about? Or something completely different, maybe not even physical, that would "make it worth it for you"?

Faber castell polychromos are really good too. Caran d'ache luminance are beyond incredible. I like a lot of their products.

*sigh*

It’s not physical and it includes a well established, long term commitment. Something physical isn’t necessary for me. What is “worth it for me” is not tangible and I suppose it would change depending on the situation or other person involved.

Often times, worth it for me just means I’m getting something out of it whether it appears so or not.

Oh! You’ve reminded me, I have these lovely Faber Castell watercolor pencils! I forgot all about them . I’ll have to look into the other brand. :)

I'd just become frustrated with how the quality of prismacolors had decreased so I started looking. Those other pencils are expensive but wonderful. That company also makes some exquisite artist crayons.

It’s been years since I last bought art supplies, I haven’t noticed a decline in quality. :D

I have noticed Prismacolor being more readily available in smaller sets and also more widely available from different retailers. I imagine the decline in quality was better for the wallet.

I have a set that's probably at least 25 years old so I can't real justify buying a set of the others when I don't use them as much as I use other materials.

Have you ever had short hair?

Yes, I made an extreme change after high school and chopped my butt-length hair off. I didn’t do it and donate it or anything. It started to happen kind of gradually until all I had was a bob. Not a great look for me. Unfortunately, my hair looks better in a shorter length but only because it’s been thinning. I’m working on growing my hair out but in a healthier more sustainable way. Trying to avoid too much heat while training my curls so that it’s not a weird kinky texture. The weight pulls out the curls and then it’s just a weird sort of straight sort of wavy can’t quite place the category texture.

So far it’s working. :)
