Well, I can't say from experience how it works for a female. I suspect it would still stay in place nicely, and may even provide a little stimulation to your g-spot through the rectum wall. You can always get one for your guy and then try it out first.
I wonder if it feels good if used vaginally. Make sure it is clean.

Most certainly (not speaking from experience though lol). I've known people to have a plug in there all day - while carrying out their daily routine. Sure it must take an extra effort, especially keeping it in there - but yes it can and has been done. As for it looking a bit strange out there in the vanilla world... it could turn some heads, or lower them. Size then matters lol

The thinner the "stem" the easier it will be to keep it in, because your anus will close more on the thinner stem. The thicker the stem of course, the harder it can be.
You didn't say whether he wanted this while you were together or not. While getting used to it, since you don't like the harness, I would suggest trying a pair of pants/shorts, etc. that fit snuggly in the butt. Holds the plug in very nicely. As you get used to it, you can slowly work up to holding it in on your own.

Help It's falling out
I have been using a medium plug for the last few months and suddenly I am having difficulty keeping in. I was out cutting my lawn and I had to go in several times to reinsert into my butt. I didn't think I would have this issue. Does this mean I have to the next size up? Any help would be appreciated.

Some strenuous labor, such as mowing the lawn, can cause you to bear down on those muscles a little without even noticing. That will push it out.
If it has been happening other times, like if you are sitting and watching tv, then maybe you should rest your butt a little. As much I am fascinated and would love to have someone make me have something in my ass all the time, I can't imagine that over the long term, it has no effect on your muscles.

long-term buttplug wear
I have a lot of experience in long-term wear of a buttplug. I've found that a classic shape is important - the "beginner's" style doesn't really work. Medium or large are easier to hold in.
Most importantly, I think, is not too much lube. As little as you can get away with. I use a dab of KY or (when the plug is really clean) my saliva. I can then insert and it's easier to hold in.
Secondly, wearing a harness of some kind, or just sitting on the plug for awhile, can be helpful, even if you then take off the harness or walk around; if you're like me, your butt will adjust to conform to the plug.
Finally, your rectal walls absorb, so after a period of time, you will have absorbed the lubricant and the plug will stay in easier. There is a period of time where it may be difficult to get out because the lube is now "gone", but don't worry, your body will compensate! You rectal walls also make a certain amount of mucous, to help things flow, of course, and this will eventually coat your buttplug and it should come out the natural way.
I've wear my plug anywhere from three to seven nights a week and quite often all day long. My longest stretch with continuous wear, save for potty breaks, was a solid week. I aim to shoot for two weeks this December.
