Are intermittent low scores par for the course, or am I doing something wrong?

The note on the mind control story seems odd. One would think that mind control is almost by definition a subset of reluctance/non-consent.

It’s like you read my mind.

Puns aside, yes, that was my exact sentiment when I saw my chapter was published with that editor’s note.

Here's a damned fool question along the same lines:

What is the average score here at LIT? As in, if you added everything up and divided it by the number of stories, what would you get?

I'm just wondering because, yeah, sure, the rating system is 1-5 stars. But that doesn't necessarily mean (see what I did there?) that the average rating is an actual 3.0.

Warning: Obsessing over scores will drive you nutz. Thinking anything less than a Red-H is faulty. The near-infinite LIT audience possesses near-infinite fetishes, (dis)likes, psychoses, and slippery fingers. Don't have too much faith in their collective wisdom or proclivities.

Yes, I like high scores. I also like views, likes/faves, and comments pro or con -- ANY reaction shows I've provoked a reader sufficiently. I take death threats as badges of honor.

My most-viewed story has the most comments (for a non-LW piece) and my lowest score, but many faves. Yes, I was provocative. I am satisfied.

*Chuckles* My question was more academic than anything. I have 1 story up, and it's around 3.75 right now. Frankly, I'm surprised it's that high! I seriously doubt any story that I submit will ever break a 4.0; if people don't pan it for the content, then they'll probably tear it apart on technical details. I write far more for my own amusment than for the approval of others.

I just read it. Extremely well done. I think it might be suffering score wise because of the shortness. 1 page stories don't tend to do well here. Other than the cage, I would have happily traded places with him!

I looked at all the stand-along stories published over a five week period (link), and the average rating was 4.07.

Wise words, I sense. I suspect I'll still have to learn the hard way though not to obsess.

I initially aimed high. Many Red-H's adorned my story list. I felt good. All those brownie points!

A series of 1-bombs changed that, sending many down into the 4.3 range. Disaster! Sulky depression! Now I mostly count favorites and follows as marks of quality, and comments as badges of honor. Views and votes are nice but not definitive IMHO. In LW, a *low* score can be positive. Take what you can get.

Oh.

Wow.

That was... unexpected. Thank you!

And for what it's worth, the cage may not happen... if he holds out. :D

Thank you! As I said, it was more curiosity than anything else.

*chuckles* This is where having a low self-esteem is beneficial for me, I think. I don't aspire that high! But thank you, Hypoxia!

Has anyone ever had Laurel stick her own editor's note on top of a story? Haven't experienced it. Just checking on whether it actually ever happens.

I often read exhibitionism/voyeur category and have seen "Editor's note: this story contains scenes of incest or incest content" often enough, or even forced move of chapters to incest category when there's situations involving family nudism, sometimes even without sexual element to it. Forced move is unfortunate because an e/v story may not contain full, traditional sex at all and the family involvement is often just a sideline, even when used for additional kink points.

I have also seen similar notice about non-consensual situations, sometimes not seen as anything special by the author themselves and/or not central to the plot.

Your mileage may vary

I just published a story that has started out with my lowest ratings ever.
https://www.literotica.com/s/the-getaway-11

The subject matter -- a hotwife-type scenario organized by the husband -- seems to be really divisive. I'm sure others didn't care for the writing. It's all good.

The funny thing is, despite the low reviews, it's also been favorited more than any other story I've ever written.

There seems to be no predictability. Stories I really like seem to get lower scores than stories I think aren't going to do well. Go figure.
