Well, Hom, you're obviously a natural mystic in that sense. And an excellent teacher.

Harrumph. I don't teach. I just try to shave away complications, then slowly add them back in as it is appropriate to do so. And some things I will just never be able to manage to get across.

Ever considered starting a thread discussion on how aspects of Zen, Buddhism and other forms of mysticism and evolutionary practices inform the exploration of kink and BDSM? I know I'd be there with bells on.

I'm thinking it might just be you, me, shanks, and maybe Netz. I doubt anyone else would see even a shred of relevance or interest. And, honestly, I'm not sure how I'd start such a topic.

I started a thing myself just now, but I don't know if I'm going to find any takers. It's pretty specific...

I'll look into it.

Meanwhile, I think the Bistro needs some more seeds for poetry. How bout a koan we can all struggle with and write about?

I don't think I know any short ones.

G'morning everyone. I'm terrifyingly chipper today, if a little tired. *waggling eyebrows meaningfully and smugly*

I know that look. I'm happiest when I am wearing it :)

*laughing!*

Guess I'm not very enlightened. Five months and I'm still trying to get the jet into the habit of saying "please" and "thank you."

'Course, he's generally under extreme duress at the time...

Those are the best times to get a "thank you".

I don't exactly have a stellar opinion of the direction the mahayana sect went. I'm much more ch'an/zen adherent in my thinking.

 again

*bows*

Weeelll, I have a degree in this stuff. That, by itself, means nothing, but it does mean that I am perhaps more broadly read than someone more actively involved. Given the history of the philosophies attached, the evolution of the beliefs, the history of the regions, when the philosophies were introduced, etc, I am given the opportunity to get a broad look at what is going on. And, as I have precious little personal stake in mysticism, as I am trying to gain no converts, I can afford to leave my semantic load accessible. And, honestly, I've spent hours and hours listening to college professors blather on about this, then more hours trying to reexplain it my classmates.

For whatever reason, I had far less trouble grasping this than, well, pretty much anyone else I studied with. My primary religious studies professor had actually spent time with the Maharashi Yogi in India, and was a former Hare Krisna, and he made comments many, many times on how well I got on with this material. I wrote a couple of koans for him, and he actually accused me of plagiarising them :D

The result of all of this is that I have figured out how to get the material to come across a little more clearly. I figure if I can explain it, then maybe I can get someone interested enough to read for themselves. Unfortunately, I am an awful person, and would make a horrible Buddhist. I'm too worldly, too fond of meat, and, fuck me running, but my karma is a train wreck.

I have heard this more than once before.

Heard this before too. And, yes, I'm happy to have an audience for such things.

*snort* Yeah, this I've heard too. :D

*on knees* will you do it now Sir pretty pleae? I don't care who watches as long as you do it now

Well, that is forward. I like the urgency though. Well done.

It would likely earn you some attention if you were close enough to actually lay on hands.

you don't mind me asking do you? *worried frown in case overstepped the mark*

no, by all means. as long as i can watch :) (in all seriousness, i have no qualms about being a model for him to show others *how* to spank, and have had it happen several times. i also have no qualms about watching him spank somebody else)

though i warn you... a "gentle" giant is still a giant (big, strong, and scary). youve seen his hands, have you not?

ermmmm wasn't spanking I had in mind .......

Y'all are making me wish I weren't at work right now.

I can think of exactly where I'd be, given ruby slippers, and what I'd be doing...

Well now. How was everyone's Friday night?

And by the way, Homburg, this:

Harrumph. I don't teach. I just try to shave away complications, then slowly add them back in as it is appropriate to do so. And some things I will just never be able to manage to get across.

is what I might refer to as "effective teaching."

So there.

Did yoo know that in the original book Dorothy had silver slippers? It was only changed to ruby slipper for the film and was supposed to be something to do with gold reserves and some people wan't it to include silver reserves too. The yellow brick road was the gold and the Wizard of Oz was the President

Amazing - I've watched sheep herding demos in NZ and those dogs are truly amazing but how much of that do you think is computer generated?

Someone mentioned the other day that there is a lengthy political allegory in the written version of the Wizard of Oz; Baum apparently wanted to communicate some ideas about that through particularly the symbology of the "silver slippers" and that sort of thing.

I honestly don't have time to research it at the moment but I'd bet a nickel someone has said something about it somewhere on the internet.

As an aside, without a heinous amount of detail, here's my weekend, with its lesson:

This was the spring equinox; in our system it's not the beginning of spring but rather the peak of the season which begins on February 2nd and ends on May 1st when summer begins.

To me, this season isn't a time of "lovely burgeoning life" in the way most people see traditional spring, but rather a time of fierce, fast transition and immense change. It's also a time of death. Consider - what you see out there in the greenworld isn't nearly as peaceful as it looks. Infants, both green and animal, are competing fiercely for resources, and at their most vulnerable time, subject to predators, weather and pure accident.

This weekend one of our favorite customers died, purely by accident, because she was disoriented by her meds and accidentally overdosed. She was 35 and had a 3-year-old son.

Today a friend I hadn't seen in five years walked into the shop unannounced. I knew when I saw her last that she was walking with several forms of cancer, as well as a number of other illnesses. She's a Choctaw shaman, and often disappeared and reappeared in our years of acquaintance which began in 1994, but I'd never had such a long period of silence before, and had begun to think that she had finally actually chosen to move on.

Yet here she was today, hale, hearty and jovial, after a few years in the southwest healing herself.

Also in the shop at the same time was the new lover of one of my oldest and most precious friends, reconnecting me with those memories and that wonderful companion.

I talked to our now-departed customer Michelle just last Wednesday. Now she's gone. I can say I have no regrets about my last interaction with her, and that I am often pretty conscious of the idea that each moment spent with someone I love may be my last chance to see them on this plane. But it's so poignant today, and so strange to have all of these beginnings and endings at once.

To those here, to my meat - space loved ones and those I know only in the frame of a screen, alike: I love you. I appreciate you, and am grateful for you. Just so you know.

*moved, wandering around looking at daffodils, bright forsythia, the newly-blooming Bradford pear trees....*

may I bring you a posy? a simple thing of primroses softly scented tied with string .....

Annie's flowers

Proserpina, Persephone emerges now
from the home of her dark lover
and showers us with the blossoms
of her green-cloaked body, wakened
and fragrant. Annie's hands
are her hands, and the roses
are sweet words, dropping
like blossoms, fluttering
like a honey breeze.

First bursts of blessing
now up in the garden;
a promise of return fulfilled,
without a justifying excuse or pardon.
Simply a heartfelt wish made
to press away the weary
cold and chase somber thoughts
behind the glorious sun.
No room for clouds in all this blue,

By the way, we had (in standard measure) about 7 inches of snow yesterday. There's a prediction shivering off on the weather map of another inch or so in the next couple of days. Bleh.

Like everything, like everything the jonquils
seem forever now, a burst of gold
crowded around the well pump, nodding
in a chill wind. This approaching storm
may take them in hail, or they may stay
till morning, and be morning itself
one more day, one more day.

You should move here. Or, y'know, south. I don't think hairless primates were meant to inhabit those climates.

Seek, seek shelter
'neath her upturned petals.
Eager bumbershoot upended
droplets sought and ground defended
Watch o'er me, Persephone,
whilest thy succulence I plunder.

She knows both, spring life and death
and harsh drops batter blossoms
and make them stronger. One bright hand
raised above ground, and one held tight
to her beloved buried deep. This earth
opens to the driving sky, receives
and blesses that bright force.

Effervesce! Rise up!
From cloud to ground
is a trick of the mind.
Power and fury arc from mother
to sulking skyward child
a reminder of whose bosom forms those tears
