Cliques !

I find the GB very hard going and much prefer here, HT, AH and a few other bits.

One of the problems with the GB is the outright hate that goes on in there. That doesn't of course mean there isn't good threads in there, there are, but they are few and far between. Most newbies will head there thinking it a good place to introduce themselves.

I know all boards have problems, I belong to several, but I think this has some of the worst attitudes i've come across (GB mostly, the other areas are generally friendly).

Have you ever noticed a pattern in some of these forums? Its usually the same litsters over and over posting the same threads, and the same litsters replying to them over and over again.

Very rarely is there anything interesting in the threads they post, but you generally see that a group of the same people keep gravitating in these threads. Usually newbies are shut out and given a cold response. Especially in the GB !

Am I the only one who notices this? I just feel I need to visit more Boards for a change.......you know? something refreshing !

The GB is a clique. The only way into that clique is to be phenomenally full of yourself. I was a newbie in there for a while. I wasn't qualified to stay.

Thank goodness. :nana:

With all the GB bashing that's been going on in this thread, one could say that the HT Cafe has become quite a clique in and of itself... :p

You just need to have thick skin to hang out over there... ;)

Why does anyone "need to have thick skin" just because they want to socialize a bit and try to be friendly???

Not having thick skin isn't the problem in the GB. I hang out in a number of real life places every week that make the people in the GB look like a bunch of panty-waists. And then the alcohol gets added in.

There's a difference between rough-and-tumble and people simply being full of themselves. The rough-and-tumble is at least fun to be around.

I have had a change of opinion regarding the GB since coming to Lit. When I began posting I looked at the GB but never felt comfortable to participate. I saw meanness towards others so I shied away. I made some nice friends on the PG and it became a sort of 'home'. I also heard the comments 'be careful on the GB, they'll eat you up' - I heeded those thoughts.

I did continue to look at the GB, but just didn't feel 'fortified' enough to participate. Perhaps it is akin to getting ones sea-legs. However when the HT Cafe was created it caused such a stir on the GB that I found myself responding to some of questions and thoughts of some of the folks there.

I remember reading one thread (don't remember which) and I said to myself 'that is just so darn funny'. I had to respond - I finally 'got it'. There was so much humor there. Sure there are some that are more militant but what I found was many nice folks and we engaged in conversation and shared thoughts. I felt far more comfortable - perhaps that is because I felt appreciated for participating honestly and respectfully. I admitted my change of opinion - I kept an open mind. I found the GB to be interesting - there are so many threads that spark my interest now feel free to comment.

My posting habits have changed since arriving at Lit. I really have made some wonderful friends here - from a spattering of all the boards. While I don't participate on lots of threads on the GB, neither do I participate on lots of threads on the PG.

Regardless of the board, if a thread is of interest to me I most likely participate. I'm really glad for my change of opinion - glad that I was welcomed there - and enjoy Lit even more.

Trust me... The GB was A LOT less "fluffy" when I first joined.

You should have been around during election time... ;)

Your right about that. I saw some of it. That was some of the best stuff I've seen in that forum!!!

The GB is definately an aquired taste. Much better now that the election is over though I must say! I have fun there.

It is Crazy.... but it is fun to try new foods. lol

Darn, I guess I was on too many cocktail parties in my life...I can play in every board, yet am never really at home....

Guess I will have to pick one forum and start to be friends only with that people? No more mingling? no more meeting new and interesting people?

People come and people go....it's just a fact.
Cliques are always forming.
Quite interesting to watch really....there are so few names that really jump out that I remember from a few years back.
I'm pretty sure this will be the case in another few years as well.

I agree with alot of what you've said here Cate.

y'know, I was once criticized by a "friend", rather harshly in my opinion, for jumping from thread to thread, for posting on "too many" threads, for posting a reply to "conversations" that I wasn't a part of, and it was even suggested that I did this as a way of searching for somewhere to "fit in".
I was quite hurt by those remarks and haven't felt the same about that person since.

Like you Cate, I don't necessarily stick to certain threads, unless it's one I've started. I do post on a variety of threads, I do reply to posts that I find of interest, I do "hop around" to all the boards. As a way of searching for a place to fit in? Hardly
I have interest in a VERY wide variety of topics... I find people interesting and what they do and say, and why, interesting. After that person made those comments to me, I actually did cut back on my posting, for fear of putting my nose, per se, where it didn't belong. You wouldn't believe the number of litsters who noticed and pm'd/im'd me to ask me WHY I wasn't posting there anymore??

I don't listen to that kind of garbage any longer. I go where I know I'm welcome and post where I like, to what I'm interested in.
I'll never again let someone intimidate me like that... it made being here very uncomfortable for me.

oh my.. did I get off topic here or what?
sorry

no matter what forum or thread it is... to as many as you want to!

ouch? Were you reading on the bdsm board? lol

I lurk there but don't post a lot. I might get spanked. :D (And I'm being silly - if I want to post on the BDSM board I do.)

I don't really mind the cliques anymore. I just post in threads that are started by some of the people I like. But Joining in pissing contests is not my kind of thing.

There does seem to be a lot of cliqueyness about on the GB, but not excusively so. I've seen some of it in the limited time I've been here in certain threads on other boards, some of the threads in the AmPics thread seem to have become flirting threads where the OP and certain other people flirt or talk dirty to each other - not that I'm complaining or dissing that!

There does seem to be certain people and certain threads on the GB that are designed to get certain other peoples attention - there seems to be a couple of people there that hate another couple of people and they just sling mud and flame each other from different threads. Anyone else trying to join in either gets ignored or abused themselves. There seems to be a lot of silliness there too with people creating alts just to flame others, a lot of childish behaviour going on there. But there have also been some interesting threads on there, some which I've posted in without any trouble. Again, it's a case of sorting the wheat from the chaff. And theres a lot of chaff, people posting threads simply saying 'i'm bored', or 'Don't know what to eat'!

I haven't tied myself down to a certain board at all - I post in AmPics, playground, here, basically wherever takes my fancy, so far (touchwood!) haven't had a problem!

Like seeks like

I'm fairly new here. I never went on the General Board because How To caught my eye first. That was because of my reason for coming: I wanted to seek knowledge, I wanted to share knowledge.
When, overall, everyone was quite civil and encouraging, I was profoundly relieved. The atmosphere to "sit down, have a drink, share your thoughts," persuaded me to stay, so to speak.
After a while, I did check out some of the other areas, but GB was too much like I remembered high school (and seeing as how I almost didn't live through it the first time.....), I'm not writing at the moment, so I had nothing to say on Author/Editor boards, Roleplaying Board was interesting, but I somehow was at a loss on how to participate. I've yet to visit the BDSM and GLBT boards; I may sometime, but I'm in no hurry. "How To" really seems like my cup of tea.
I'm glad HT and HTC are here, regardless.
