The lace of the boy short and the rigid was of her back really make this photo.

... and his arm/hand. I don't think it would work so well with a less 'masculine' guy, if that makes sense. (Or maybe it's just that I tend to have a preference for masculinity.)

I agree. The subtlety of the hair along his arm and the denim jeans denote a blue collar control.

That was the first thing that occurred to me actually...

Possible explanation: If the "business end" had something in it, like a wedge, the "open end" (with the small nails) could apply gradual pressure, but always be easily backed off.

Looking at the way the spring goes across the pin I would say that someone or something is holding it open.
