You post gay-male stories? Much is explained.

Yep, straight, bi, and lesbian ones too. Thanks for noticing. :)

That was uncalled for and mean of you, AS. You don't need to stoop that low, I'm disappointed in you. :(

I agree with you. Carson is in a class of his own though. :)

I think he thought I was stalking him. ;)

I read and commented on everything.

LOL, as if you stalking anyone is a bad thing.

You're so sweet.

And there are plenty of AH regulars I'd love to stalk.

And plenty of AH not-so-regulars.

And even a few GB folk. ;)

And we'd call it "Sarahh's stalking thread". How to get Sarahh to stalk you, tie you down and use your body for her own enjoyment. :D

(But what if I'd rather be tied down?)

I respectively beg to differ. There are other sights that post the m/f ratio and I would be willing to bet that it is similar here. That ratio is usually around 50/50. Women read just as much as men, if not more. Didn't you see Oprah the other day.? ;) But seriously, and please excuse any sort of over generalization, women are more stimulated through the read than the film. I myself find both quite wonderful, but I wouldn't consider myself the standard of well anything. ;)

As far as comparing the different categories/genres, it really is futile. It is like comparing apples and oranges. There is no formula per se for writing a 4.8-5.0 story for Lit or anywhere else for that matter. Sure you have the requirements of grammar and making sure that it is structurally sound with strong characters and plot, but other than that, the authors are free to explore.

I have quite a few writers that I'm working with and they are a great sample of the writers at Lit. They range in ability and proficiency. By looking at the ratings of some of the stories, it is clear that even experience isn't an indicator, as the ratings are pretty steady between the writers.

Advice for your author:

The public is always fickle! If she based the merit of her writing on the ratings, she is doing herself a disservice. (I mean the president doesn't leave office because his approval drops below 30%, right?) Of course she should take any comments into account, but the ratings themselves are so arbitrary.

Good luck to both you and your writer! :rose:

I wonder how they know? All they can possibly know for certain is how many people are claiming to be male or female, and even then they don't know how many people have aliases, and possibly aliases of a different sex from their physical body.

The majority of my stories have are in the GM category, and the most responses I get are from women, with a few men thrown in for good measure. I simply think that women are more likely to post or send positive comments than men. I think it's the whole nurturing business. It's not a rule, though— I'm not an expert on anything but breathing and talking nonsense.

As far as cracking the top lists, I think a lot of it is appealing to a wide audience. That doesn't mean that your story needs a little bit of everything in it, but either the sex and/or the characters needs to strike a chord with both men and women, the gay, straight, those who like it fast and rough or slow and sweet.

Oftentimes it's looking at what appeals to a lot of people. I check the Feedback Portal when I'm bored, and once or twice I've seen comments like: "Who knew gay sex could be so hot! I'm a woman and I was turned on!" or even "This isn't even my thing—I'm a gay man, but I loved your story!" If your mission is to be in the top 500, you want comments like these.

All that being said, I don't think there's a formula. I was shocked as hell when a story I cranked out on a whim landed on the list, but entries on which I spent more thought and effort have earned lower ratings. I think that might just be due to five or six people who really like one series I've written, since my other stories have recieved more views despite lower ratings. Last but not least, I remain a master of spouting nonsense, so pretend I'm Wikipedia and check more reliable sources.

hmmmm

I dunno, ladies. DWSimon, Tom Collins, artisticbiguy & dlmercer rank pretty high on my list ...... along with Carson, of course.

What she said. ;)

No seriously, the ratings you receive on a story are not indicative of the quality of the story. Well OK I suppose I should say not always, usually not even. Anyway expecting anything beyond a rating of some sort is a fools errand. The story I have written that I felt was the most exciting and involving has the lowest rating among all of mine. The only reason I can think of for why it is that low, it is a non consent/reluctance story that goes closer to an actual rape story than 99.9% of the non consent/reluctance stories.
 omg where?

I didn't know you were a lesbian?! j/k

Neither did I. (Checks) Nope. The posting I responded to referred to the stories I post at Lit.; not what I "am" (which is bi). It's a little embarrassing. I have E-awarded stories for every category but my own.

Ms your silly, click my name, go to my home page and read The Photo Shoot. That is my one and only non consent/reluctance story. ;)
