^doesn't understand that when the UK banned the slave trade, so did the US in the very next year. Which sort of highlights that saying that the UK was "the only one doing anything about the slave trade" is kind of false, if not an outright lie.

Spain banned slavery and slave raiding in the Americas in 1542. So the UK wasn't "the first." Yes, Spain continued to allow slave raiding from Africa, but obviously the UK wasn't "first."

Portugual did the same in 1570.

During the Revolutionary War, in 1775 the US banned slave trading. Further, in 1787 the US Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 outlawing slavery in the Northern Territories.

In the end, the abolishing of slavery in the "modern era" began in the 1300's when Sweden abolished slavery within it's lands and territories (including Finland).

The British got involved when they realised the profits that could be made in the late 1500's.The Spanish and Portuguese had a government monopoly in the trade although the Spanish plantation owners would buy from the British.They did not start colonising the West Indies until 1623.
