The extent to which pictures of, or including, male genitalia are vilified both here at Lit and on other similar sites, led me to consider that perhaps, as subject matter, images of male masturbation were not only taboo, but generally distasteful, except that my experience suggested otherwise.

My personal feeling is that pictures solely of male genitalia can be a bit boring, but seeing a man playing with his cock is very arousing.

I think that's an interesting distinction. Medical grade photography of masculine sexual anatomy may be boring. Exactly why it is so frequently banned or discouraged, I think, has little to do with it being boring. I can appreciate, however, that to make the leap from uninteresting to arousing demands a little bit of context.
