Cute thread, although if people don't vote on stories, they might not vote on you poll :D

I must admit I only vote if I am going to give them a 4 (doing well, want to see more from the author) or a 5 (unique, brings something new, great writing style etc). I usually only leave a PC if the story seems to have a low vote, and shouldn't. Weird, I know.

How do you know if the story has a low vote? only the author can see the votes unless they're in the top 500

The rating (but not the numbr of votes) on all stories can be found by looking the story up on the general category lists by title. Agree, though, that you'd have to take some effort to find the rating of the story you are reading.

I only vote 3 or higher, and rarely vote a 3 for the same reason darkinclad mentioned. If I read a story that's promising but not well executed I'll send feedback to author discussing the good and the bad while encouraging him or her to continue writing. I rarely leave public comments.

As for the disparity in the number of views vs. votes, there are a lot of click-backs on this site. People read a a ways in then go back to find a different story more to their liking. There's no way of telling how many people fully read a story and then vote or don't vote.

Votes are nice, but I prefer comments and feedback - the constructive ones, not the "I thought it sucked" type.

And when a writer gets an opinion from you, dear, it is worth gold.

I Vote most often, comment when i can think of something useful to say, and I Haven't emailed yet I feel that it might be too personal or something...

but if i wrote a story I would prefer email/vote/public comment in that order Because email no one ever knows just how bad of a story it was if they tell me in secret... lol. voting because i could easily tell how my story looks to everyone else. Public commenting well... I don't mind doing it because I wouldn't bash someone without telling them why but others don't have that compulsion. I fear the wrath of flaming haters- I know I shouldn't but I can't help it.

May I note that for some writers here, leaving a comment on the story after the first couple of days conveys nothing to the author of a story?--that you might want to e-mail if you really want the comment to be seen. If the author has a large story portfolio, they really can't check to see if comments have been put on stories more than a couple of days old. The site doesn't send notifications that comments have been added.

I sometimes discover a really, really nice comment on a story several months after it has been posted, which is really too late to say thanks for.

I got the following off the faq. I don't know how to link things. They say "yellow E's" but it's really green. Must have been yellow originally or something. If you want you see what they look like, then head to the faq, or check out sr71plt's page to get a good look at a variety. He's great.

That's weird. And actually the W's are bluish now. Kinda this color. So I guess that would be more cyan. :)

Anyway, I think I've answered this before, but as far as voting goes, if I don't like a story or find it particularly bad, I won't vote or comment. I don't think I've ever given a story anything below a 4. Sometimes I comment, sometimes I don't...that depends a lot on the story and/or author.

Sometimes if I feel strongly about something in the story, I'll contact the author as opposed to commenting on the story itself.

Then dear, you have no idea what I've been doing to your stories! :D

But you have a good point. Will stop giving you some advertising. Actually, I think that when someone comments doesn't it get sent to some newly created feedback page that others look at? So, I feel I might be drawing attention to something that deserves it.

As for me, y'all: feel free to leave your gushing comments of praise at any time no matter how old a story might be!

Oh, you can gush over my stories any time you want. :D

Thanks.

I usually vote only on stories that I really like. I don't even finish reading the stories that I really hate.

I vote usually if I finish reading the story. If I get bored before that, I usually don't vote, unless I got specifically annoyed by something.

Personally, I never vote less than a 4. I dont pretend to be good enough to judge someone else harshly. If I really like it, then it gets a 5. I only leave actual comments if I think the story is trully great, and then I always identify myself.
Writing isn't easy and bad vote can be a blow to one's confidence.

I always vote if I like a story, and I try to leave feedback if I see things that could be improved.

If I really DIDN'T like a story, personally, but there's nothing really wrong with it, I don't vote, because I don't feel that giving someone a 3 or a 2 accomplishes anything.

If it's truly a gigantic mess, I'll vote a 2, but that's only happened once. I'm a pretty forgiving guy, and writing is hard.

Another point. Whether or not I vote and how low I will go also depends on the stories current score. If I enjoyed it, I'll not likely give it a score that will bring it down. I would rather not vote at all in that case. It is to difficult for a story to come back from low scores, and I find myself grading on a curve.
