I am thinking that at some level, Trump knows that most Americans strongly identify with the old Horatio Alger "rags to riches" career arc, starting from humble beginnings and rising to the pinnacle of power. It's something people can relate to, "gee I used to work fast food too!"
Donald Trump, on the other hand, was born into relative affluence (Daddy gave him "only" one million dollars in seed money to start his real estate empire) and has realized belatedly that many people can't identify with that level of privilege.
