The ancient Greeks believed that our world was composed of earth, air, fire, and water, but that the heavens and the beings there were made of a purer, less tangible substance known as either quintessence or ether. Ether comes from the Greek verb aithein, meaning "to ignite" or "to blaze," and was described as "invisible fire."
