eBay Purchases

WTF!? He could/should set a "reserve" price, if he's gonna "be that way"

GrRrRrrrrrrrr

I agree. I have seen art works with a minimum bid price, a starting figure, from £15 to £3,000, and/or an undisclosed reserve price, or a higher than normal post and packaging fee e.g. £30. But each of those options requires a small payment to eBay even if the item does not sell.

As a result of my negative feedback, his rating has now gone down to 80%. Looking back at the last six months, at least two buyers have given false positives when they meant to leave a negative. If those were counted, his rating would be below 60% - a real warning to avoid him.

So do I.

It is 'original' in that it is ink and paint. Whether it is a Keith Haring 'original'?

That is the question.

This one is currently on eBay at about £20 including postage:

I had been searching eBay for Marcel Duchamp, because he has a link to my local area.

I have bought a couple of books about him and his work, but then I saw a original drawing by Duchamp offered.

I bought it.

...

I attended a symposium on Duchamp yesterday and showed this picture to the 'experts'. They were amused, but polite.

Is it real? They wouldn't/couldn't say. Without provenance it doesn't really matter whether it is or not. The provenance is what gives a picture its marketable value.

So I'm back where I started.

I think I own an original Duchamp. I can't prove that I do. Equally I can't prove that it isn't original.

I'll just enjoy it for what it is.

Time for "musée d'ogg, bounty hunter":D

I am currently bidding on six more 'original' art works. I expect to lose half by being outbid.

That is wise.

Know your own limits and what they are worth to you. (which you obviously already know).

Yes. I only buy what I like and at prices I'm prepared to pay. If I win with the minimum bid, that's OK, but I set my limit in my mind, bid about half that, and will come back if I'm outbid by a small amount.

As well as 'original' art work, I collect a whole range of items, including local postcards. One postcard ended last night. I knew it was fairly rare so bid nearly six pounds. It sold for 25!

A few weeks ago another rare local postcard was soon out of my price range. It sold for nearly 100 pounds.

My 'Picasso's are similar to many that have recently sold on eBay for several hundred pounds even with absolutely NO provenance. I don't mind paying 25 pounds for a 'Picasso' but nearly 1,000 pounds for an equally dubious attribution? No way.

Several 'Keith Haring's from the same seller I bought from have recently reached hundreds of pounds, again with no provenance. Are mine worth that? It depends on who bids on eBay.

My total collection including expensive postage has cost me less than a modern limited edition print. My Picasso Girl With A Dove gives me as much pleasure as if it was the £50 million original - and I don't have to increase my house insurance policy. ;)

This is getting silly.

Today's purchases are a Toulouse-Lautrec and a Degas. (without the pictured frames)

The two Modigliani arrived this morning.

I showed them to our local Artists' Cooperative.

"I could do that!"

My response:

"Yes, you could, but you charge more for one of your drawings than I paid for two Modiglianis - even if they are fakes."

In the post - Jean Michel Basquiat ($42.00 including mail costs):

I lost out on a Picasso I was bidding on.

It is from the same seller as some of the ones I've bought. While I paid between $15 and $30, the last one sold for $750.
