Emotional music

Re: Yes, I DO have emotions..

Whoops.. We're explaining why, are we?

Songs I cannot listen to or I'll start sobbing hysterically:

-Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls
-Fields of Gold, by Sting
-Storybook love, from the Princess Bride soundtrack
-I can't make you love me, by Bonnie Raitt

Iris was the song that best described and Fields of Gold was the favorite song of Himself.. Storybook love was the most bitterly ironic song involved in all of it with all of the volitile emotions that get stirred up by memories associated with the Princess Bride.. And I can't make you love me-- well, that's pretty much my theme song, eh.

Mostly memories cause those. Same way the Fugee's rendition of 'Killing me softly' gives me chills and Ani DiFranco singing Amazing Grace makes my adrenaline go.

Killing me softly was associated with a cruel ex of mine.. And a guy once attempted to rape me to Ani DiFranco singing Amazing Grace.

YOU"LL NEVER WALK ALONE

Not only have I heard of it, my senior class chose it as "Our Song" in 1968.

My 'mourning music' is the New World Symhony. (especially the Allegro movement.) I associate it with my father's funeral, the Challenger disaster, and getting the news that my mother-in-law had passed on. It's what I listen to when I want to mourn those I've lost.

Days of Future Past by the Moody Blues is what I listen to when I'm in need of a pick-me-up. (preferably through headphones so I'm not distracted.) "Knights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon" always seem out of place or incomplete for me if they're not heard as part of the complete piece.

I have to agree with you, Harold. Nights in White Satin and Tuesday Afternoon are much better when part of Days of Future Passed.

Emotional chap, isn't he!

I wasn't going to share this at first, then I thought, hell, it was twenty years ago.

My very first love had just told me, in her father's house, that she didn't want to see me anymore. So putting our song 'You make me feel brand new' by the stylistics on the turn table, I listened to the first two lines then left, the tears running down my face.

Now, whenever I hear that song I choke, in fact I'm choking just telling you about it.

A romantic fool or what!

Carl.

OK, I have one that only a true Aussie could fully understand. I was too young to remember the event, but picture this.... The America's Cup of 1983, and Men at Work Release "Land Down Under", the song that came to represent both Australia's America's cup win, and everything it means to be Australian (And I know that everyone thinks that their country is the greatest, but seriously, I don't think there is another place I could live and be as happy).

I'd always loved the song, but I didn't fully appreciate it's effect on me and ALL Australians until just last year. I was working as a glassy at a pub on a Satuday Night. The Rugby World Cup was on the Bigscreen with the sound turned off. Australia was playing Ireland and the two teams were neck and neck. Now this pub ALWAYS plays great music, but just as this one song ended, Australia scored an AMAZING tie to break the Deadlock and seal the game, and at that exact moment, "Land Down Under" was played. The entire bar, some 500 people, patrons and staff alike, stopped what they were doing to watch the try in awe as this classic Aussie tune played in the background. For the next 3 minutes, no drinks were poored, or even requested as the crowd sang to the song as one, hugged each other in triumph and wiped tears of joy from their face. THAT is what this song is all about. And everytime I hear it, I think about that night. It was at that moment that I realised what being Australian meant to me. More than all the tea in China.

If you have been even a TINY bit inspired by this post, give the credit to Men At Work, for I am listening to them, right now. And I'm as happy as I've been in a long time. :)

Yes Rosebud, I remember that song. It's from the musical "Carousel."

Does anyone remember the effect the theme from the TV movie "Brian's Song" used to cause. I remember being in rooms where music was playing and when that theme would come on (it was very popular then) people would start tearing up.

In a rush...short post!

Carmena Burana(sp?) and Ave Maria kick ass on the emotional front.

To elaborate on emotional music, the song that fills me with alot of pride and emotion is "The Star Spangled Banner", which for those outside the USA that aren't familiar with it, is our great country's national anthem.

Some of my favorite love songs are: "Dreaming Of You" (Selena), "Amazed" (Lonestar), "I Do (Cherish You)" (98* and Mark Wills both did their own versions), and alot of others that I can't think of currently.

I grew up with parents who loved that song "You'll Never Walk Alone" and I used to think it oddly maudlin. Then, Cheers used the song as a serenade to Carla who was unmarried and pregnant again as they handed her spare change and she marched up the steps. Ever since, I have fits of laughter when I hear this song.

I guess it would qualify as the true emotional champ if it could inspire rage, maybe a Minnie Riperton version exists or something?

Songs full o f memories....

Well, I cant listen to "Grandpa" by the Judds without losing it. The day my grandfather died I heard it 3 times on the drive south. God that made it hard to drive.

There's a song, I think its called, "Dont cry out loud" That's my song.

My husband and I first danced to a song called "Two Become One" Dont remember who sang it, (god, that was only 3 yrs ago)but it was our wedding theme. After that dance, I looked up,(way up) and knew I had found him. Its hard to explain.

To really make me bawl, just play "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I heard it the day I brought my girl home from the hospital, and I broke down.

And thats BBB.

I grew up on show tunes, so just about anything from "Cabaret", "My Fair Lady" or "South Pacific" sends me right back to childhood.

"Days of Future Past" is one of those albums that keeps me from throwing out my old turntable. That and "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy", "Turnstiles" and "Bat Out of Hell". Yes, I know they're on CD -- but it's not the same.

"Moonriver" stuck with me after seeing "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for the first time, and always brings me back to New York and memories of some Holly Golightlys I used to know.

I have a CD of old TV cartoon theme songs, and for some reason these little pieces of music always bring a lump to my throat and turn me six years old again. The most haunting themes, and ones that transport me the most, are the themes to "Gigantor", "Underdog", "Marine Boy", and, the best, the original theme to "Kimba The White Lion".

And there's something about that damn soundtrack to "Casino Royale" that always sends me back to the 60s.

It was by the Spice Girls, I don't particularly like them but it is one that makes me feel emotional.

Tssk!

Tssk, indeed, my United Kingdom friend, for "The Star Spangled Banner" is an old English drinking song with new lyrics.

What gets me is how on earth a piece of music so hard to sing ever made it as a bar song?

I must dmit, on the national anthem thing, us americans got the short end of the stick. The FRENCH national anthem.. Now THERE's a song. When I translated it for french class it damn near gave me nightmares-- all that stuff about the evil ones coming for your children and blood and stuff.. Come on, everyone sing it with me!

Les enfants de la patrie, la jour de gloire est arrive..

:)

Speaking of the French...

I was thinking about the various nationalities that post here regularly on the BB.... and has anyone else noticed that the French have yet to make an appearance??

Coincidence?

Hmmm.....

Ah ah, Lasheir I, how you say, be the first, my little american frind.LoL

Viva la France!

Si vous voulez je peut ecrire tous mes commentaires en francais.

I went to french school and we speak it at home. Now here is the joke, I'm Italian and my husband is Irish. The Quebec government would be so proud. We have been assimilated. They remind me of the Borg "resistance is futile".

Hell, we're so french that even France doesn't want us.

Nahhhh... I mean the "real" French.

You know, the one's from France... The one's who don't...

Ummm.... Is anyone gonna get upset if I insult the French??? (I'm just trying to be a "more moderate Lasher" these days, btw...)

That's blasphemy! Don't let our premier hear you say that.LOL

btw the old Lasher works best. The BB is so nice now that I don't need my insulin.

Hey, I am singing that this fall at some sports events in town!! (I love making people cry... is that a bad thing..?)

There are some songs that can do it to me just based on what they say, like that country one by Colin Raye about the grandparents I think it is called "love me?"

"Amanda" by boston

"Proud to be an American" by glen fry

But memories.... oh memories....

I wish I knew the names and real titles but let's see

- I think it is called "sometimes when we touch?"
(Sometimes when we touch... the honesty is too much, and I have to close my eyes and hide... I want to hold you till I die, till we both break down and cry, I want to hold you... till the fear in me subsides). (my first broken heart)

- Never Surrender by Corey Hart (chastising experience... don't ask)

- I want to know what love is by foreigner (long story.. covers a huge period in my life)

- Never let you go by Steelheart, Today by John Denver, Everytying I own by bread, Winnie the Pooh theme song, and Angel eyes by Jim Brickman (my son who is in heaven now)
but what really makes me think of him is a song by simon and garfunkel called "bookends"... that one always does it for me. Lots of songs make me think of him, always, but these are the ones that bring the tears.

- The first time ever I saw your face (is that the title, I don't know who sings it, but it was playing as I drove miles away to college for the first time and my mother was sobbing in the drive way.... it made me feel so bad..)

- Father and son by Cat stevens (my two uncles played and sang it with their classical guitars one christmas, perfect and without practicing, and it was so good [it really was] that everyone cried!)

There are a couple more that I can't bring to surface right now, and so whether anyone cares or not, I will probably come back and ammend this list......

When I was in my early twenties, my Mother, who never liked a single piece of music I liked, walked into my room to ask me a question. I had on a song by Kenny Loggins called "Keep the Fire" and she said "Thats a really nice song."
I had always thought of that song as a love song and had dismissed it as such not realizing it's deeper meaning. Oddly enough after she had told me this, for some unexplainable reason everytime I heard that song I would cry. And not a weepy kind of cry. A depressed, my world is shattered cry (i'm gonna get killed for this I can tell).
My Mother died shortly after that episode without much warning. Oneday I walked for miles and sang that song as I did. It finally dawned on me that the song was about someone leaving and telling another to keep going and not to give up on life (at least thats what I believe it means now.). I don't know if subconsiously I sensed it all along or it was her way of telling me something she knew already that she didn't want to come right out and say, but it made its mark. I still can't listen to the whole song without breaking down, but at least I understand why.
