Love this has such a luminessence to it, considering the very artfully done shibari I still maintain this could probably be displayed in a more mainstream modern setting and considered art and not psuedo pornorgraphy. Perhaps its just the cooling colors .........not sure really.

I hope it doesn't spoil your fun, but it's just a color negative of a fairly ordinary bondage photo.

Well good. I've just been having a debate with some yokels on another board about digital processing (photoshop, etc) and 'art'. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with photography or photoshop, but I think the combination makes for a lot of half-assed images that wow the rubes with one-button effects and, over all, lower the standards of art for both producers and consumers. But that's just me.

I think you are absolutely right. I think that art is taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary. Whatever tools an artist uses to do this is purely incidental to the image produced. If it's a strong, provocative image surely it doesn't matter how it was produced? I think people get too caught up with the mechanics of art.

Point well made .....smiles.......I don't disagree with you. I can take a piece of pornography and have it looking like 'art' in a matter of mins. I never said the piece was of merit , I believe I intimated I like the luminessence of the color, the shibari and that it could be placed in a modern setting. I fooled around recently with overlaying a pornographic image I had altered several times over as a wallpaper study (yes the type that people hang on walls) which had a genuine Marimekko 'look' to it.
Here is something else I have yet to delete . I would have developed it futher but frankly it bored me to do it.

pathetic.jpg

If this was done on a very large scale and transposed to canvas after a bit more playing around with the 'imagery' I guarantee I could sell it and for a tidy sum. There would be no pleasure in it for me doing so.
Ohh 'signed' it as a point of humor before loading it at Photobucket....smiles
So I was hazard we are both correct keeping in mind I never stated it as a done by one of the 'Masters'.

I like that! Nice distribution of line to suggest rather than impose image. Any london gallery would charge a tidy lump of cash for that. You've inspired me to play around with some stuff I have a bit more. Thanks :)

Well, that's the ONLY place it could be, with a pose like that. I know I'd love to keep my change in there. :D

Looking through his portfolio I then found the next peice

eromenos_01.jpg

Here is the original Ancient Greek vase painting dated approx 500BC that it is 'based on'.

eromenos_05.jpg

Finally a statement by John Unger in relation to the mosaic above.

"The original vase painting this mosaic is based on has been dated approximately 500 BC. It depicts an older lover (erastes) and his beloved youth (eromenos) making love surrounded by egg-like pillows. I've always been fascinated with the clean lines and sensual allure of Ancient Greek vase paintings, and when I realized how precisely the colors of marble match the glaze of Attic red-figure vases, well, I just couldn't resist…

By contrasting explicit imagery with classical technique and reference, my goal with this mosaic was to see if I could move a work beyond shock value or controversy and make it broadly accessible. My feeling is that every time someone is able to see beauty in work that goes beyond their personal comfort level, the world becomes that much more tolerant. I'm not a big fan of alienation and shock value— it's just too easy to figure out what people's buttons are and push them, you know? But I'm a huge fan of work that finds a way to gently push an audience to broaden their horizons or consider ideas they would normally find uncomfortable."

wonders if I am redeemed......smiles
