I feel like I should explain the servers real quick first though:
They have them broken up into regions (North America, Europe, Japan, Oceania[Australia & New Zealand]), then data centers, then worlds. Travel is possible between data centers and worlds in the same region, but not between regions. They are constantly rebalancing the world populations, by assigning one of 3 world statuses:
Preferred: you can transfer there for free at this time or create new characters
Standard: can create new characters or pay to transfer there
Congested: you can’t create new characters or transfer there at this time

I have my main character and a few alts on
North America > Aether > Siren
and one on
North America > Crystal > Mateus
and one I hardly use on
Oceania > Materia > Sophia

I just checked, and apparently another rebalancing occurred with last night’s maintenance. Unfortunately, the entire data center of Aether is currently under “congested” status, as is the world of Mateus.

Not to be presumptuous, but if you want to play with me (so I could help you navigate the somewhat steep learning curve of such a deep game, help you level up, party up for dungeons, etc), the best way to do so would be on Aether > Siren…but since that isn’t currently available, the best options would be to either wait until it opens with a future rebalancing, or join one of the “standard” worlds (preferably on Crystal DC [FYI, Balmung has a reputation for ERP, if you’re into that]) and message me in advance here when you want to play, because cross-world chat is unreliable, and we’d have to be on the same data center for it to work. I would totally travel to join you if you did that!

Alternatively, if you have other friends who play on open servers, you could join theirs too. Not saying this to discourage you at all, just don’t want you to be stuck somewhere alone with no one to help and/or play with you. 💗 I mentioned FFXIV to others in S&S earlier today and @Btq97 last week or so and didn’t even think to see how maintenance rebalanced the worlds until after you said you were interested.

To @EricaAnna @Btq97 and anyone else considering joining FFXIV:
Just saw that the North America > Aether > Siren world of FFXIV (where I mostly play) is now “Standard” and therefore able to create new characters on! Apparently this happened about 3 weeks ago without my knowledge, so would recommend jumping on the free trial before they rebalance the worlds and close Siren again

ETA: found this out while looking for the link for the current Free Log-in Campaign to send another friend, so if there are an FFXIV players out there who bought the full game and are not currently subscribed, you can now get 4 free days of play time, for a limited time!

LOL well if you decide to make characters on Siren, I would be happy to help you guys navigate the learning curve, show you where to go or what to do, help level up, etc!
Again, I’d always recommend the free trial that includes the first few expansions and no restrictions on play time up to a certain level (I think it might currently be 80?, on as many classes as you want) first for new players, because once you buy the full game, you’d have to subscribe. Ifff you ever did buy the full game though, you’d be able to join a Free Company, buy a house, and would be able to trade and I could spoil the fuck out of you with gear and stuff 😜

Yeah, we’re looking to do the free play to level 70 I think. Ill definitely hit you up when we pull the trigger

Ahhh, you’re right, it is 70, not 80…yet! Would recommend pulling the trigger soon if you want to get on Siren, specifically. As I mentioned before, they rebalance the worlds every few weeks or so and this last rebalancing happened 3 weeks ago and I just saw it today 😱
