First stories - Looking for Feedback

The major trap new writers fall into writing in 1st person is writing it in present tense. I think that's more the problem than the perspective.

I think I'd agree. I see a number of first person stories that go into present tense and I find it annoying, especially when later it seems like the author realized it and then switched to past without making it all consistent.

I'm willing to read a lot and try new approaches, but I have found I prefer past tense and third person. Not that other things can't be done or done well, but those are the stories that end up suiting me best.

For a long time mainstream publishers have been very reluctant to accept 1st person novels,

Bullshit (again). I work in mainstream publishing (and I'll bet you don't). As usual you are making it up as you go along to suit your personal preferences.
