Five Sources of Inspiration

Dug that video, many thanks. Still got a major brick wall on my mantis poem.
1) Glorious green queen
2) bites the head off her mate, nourishment it'll take to grow and lay his eggs
3) sacrifice
4) wicked sharp carapace and arms
5) life goes on

This is going to the top of my To-Buy list, my visual inspiration for insects is a pocket guide from 1963 with some questionable illustrations.

Thanks for that video, also, it got the juices flowing.

The greatest thing about that book is it shows the mantis both as predator and as prey.

Here's a super-rough draft of a poem inspired by this picture:

No Fishing

Who would want to go fishing
in some uninhabited
back woods parcel
of the White Witch's domain?
The unwelcoming words
on a tipping sign post
seem an almost humorous
afterthought.
The water’s reflective surface,
ringed ‘round by
desiccated deciduous
and drooping evergreen,
shows an ill-executed
amateurish watercolor,
even less welcoming
than the original.
So, again I ask
of a spot that time, and summer,
seem to have long-forgotten:
who would want to go fishing there?

Also, still hoping someone can help me out with five sources of inspiration about mothers - bad ones.

Mothers (emphasis on negative associations, if you can)

Meep, somehow I totally missed this one. Sorry!

-The made-for-TV mid-70s movie Sybil

-The first season of The Sopranos (pardon the popular reference) has a great example of a horrible mother/son relationship and the conflict the son faces in trying not to hate his mother.

-Purple Lipstick shows another side, how a mother can be hated for her inability to deal with the father's abuse.

-The song "Lipstick" by Guttermouth (couldn't find a link other than Rhapsody, might have to look around.) You'd have to have a fucked up relationship with your mom to write that.

an exercise that may help you...

write a poem/notes about how a mother is like an onion.

you need to get hold of an onion and dissect it. write about the dissection in as much detail as you can. then write down anything and everything that you can, to compare the mother to the onion.

from those notes, you should be able to find enough fodder to write a mother poem.

Pardon my ignorance. Who (or what) are luddites?

Here's the Wikipedia entry on it, but in this context this sentence captures why I mentioned it: "In recent years, the terms Luddism and Luddite or Neo-Luddism and Neo-Luddite have become synonymous with anyone who opposes the advance of technology due to the cultural changes that are associated with it."
